What to Do in Cameron Highlands

A good overnight-stay opportunity, Cameron Highlands is especially known for its jungle trails, tea tasting and strawberry farms. Located approximately 200 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur – within the eastern state borders of Pahang – it is Malaysia’s most extensive hill station. Featuring green peaks, quaint colonial towns and stunning waterfalls, this alpine escape is a welcome reprieve from the hurly-burly of city life and happens to be a major stop on the backpacker trail.

Home to tea plantations, rose gardens as well as numerous strawberry and vegetable farms, much of the Highlands' character remains unchanged from its bygone colonial past and it still exudes plenty of old English charm. The mountainside is also a popular jungle trekking and golfing hotspot. However if you’re not in the mood to delve into its rural offerings then spend the day enjoying afternoon tea and scones with locally produced ever-so-fresh strawberry jam.

Camping is a popular Cameron Highlands activity so you’ll find plenty of travellers pitching tent along the main range after a strenuous hike to enjoy the cool mountain air. Alternatively, you can erect a tent at the Sungai Pauh campsite – located nearby the Forestry Department at Taman Sedia which is an approximately five-minute drive from Tanah Rata or Brinchang.

Jungle Walks

Besides sipping tea and eating strawberries, hiking is a good way to experience the Cameron Highlands and is why many people go there. There are a plethora of clearly marked and interesting jungle trails on this mountainside – these treks generally pass through relatively unspoilt jungle. Some are just a gentle stroll while others require a certain level of physical fitness; large yellow-and-black signboards mark each trailhead.

Parit Waterfall

The trail which leads to the Parit Waterfalls – Path Four – is one of the more popular trails in the Highlands. Starting out next to the river just past Century Pines Resort in Tanah Rata, it eventually leads to the waterfalls. The beautiful waters can also be reached from the road around the southern end of the golf course. The falls are a pretty spot in itself but a certain amount of garbage from the nearby village makes its way down here.
