Enak KL is one of the city’s most famous high-end Malay restaurants. It is a pork-free restaurant set in the classy Starhill Gallery Mall that specialises in spicy Malay food. One of the Malaysian Tatler’s 2011 ‘Best Restaurants’, it was established in 2001 and serves an international clientele.
Relying heavily on age-old family recipes, it is no wonder the food has such a rich, home-made flavour to it. White rice with most of Enak KL’s dishes is simply a must and the spice levels are just right for locals. However, western visitors do not need to worry as the chilli factor can be toned down to appease to more mellow taste buds – just sneak in a word to the chef.
Enak KL is painted in warm hues, with diners enjoying their meals on comfortable high-back chairs and Balinese-style tables while the candlelight flickers off polished antique brassware set on shelves and hanging on the walls.

'The restaurant sits unpretentiously in the lower ground floor of Starhill Gallery and the food is reasonably priced despite its snazzy surrounds. The well-trained staff members truly understand what hospitality is and there is a small selection of wines for those who really cannot go without. Since the menu features such a wide array of rich, tasty and authentic food, you will need a few visits to try all your favourites. The gago-gado (cooked mixed vegetables with peanut sauce) of lightly boiled vegetables, tofu, quail eggs and peanut sauce is an especially not-to-be-missed dish. Also try the freshly prepared rendang padang (topside of beef cooked in moist coconut cream and spice curry) and the sambal tumis udang (sweetened prawns with fiery dry red chilli, tamarind juice and pepper leaves).
Wrap up your meal with one of Enak KL’s specialty desserts – the manisan kelapa muda enak (young coconut in rich, velvety custard topped with meringue) is the best way to indulge. Or you can try the pisang caramel (lightly sautéed bananas in Enak KL’s signature cardamom caramel topped with almond flakes) – a rich, contemporary version of an old classic.
