How to Rent a Car in KL

Kuala Lumpur Transportation

This section on how to rent a car in KL shows you how to explore the city at your own pace and in your own time. While Kuala Lumpur is generally convenient to get around thanks to efficient public transport options, it’s much easier to drive a car as there are plenty of well-maintained roads and highways, especially when you’re planning on venturing outside the Malaysian capital.

Renting a car is relative easy to arrange as you can book one online in advance or at a car rental booth when you arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. All you need to have is a valid driver’s license, credit card, and travel insurance. If you’re alone, below the age of 21, or prefer having an experienced guide while you’re driving in KL, some companies offer car rental with chauffeuring services.

All cars come with a full tank of petrol and unlimited mileage, and they must be returned with a full tank. Petrol stations are easy to find in KL, with Petron, Shell, Petronas, and Caltex being the most common brands in Kuala Lumpur. While prices differ from week to week, most rented cars use the RON95 petrol, which hardly costs more than RM3 per litre.

Car Rental Costs

Advanced online bookings are generally the cheapest when renting a car, especially if you book one for at least seven consecutive days. Some of the most common car models in KL include international marques like Nissan, Honda, and Toyota, but if you’re travelling on a modest budget, the cheapest options are local brands such as Perodua and Proton. Daily rates start at RM160 while weekly fees cost RM1000 upwards.

Do note that prices mentioned on rental car websites aren’t inclusive of a 6% VAT and/or booking fees. During pickup, be sure to present the same credit card used during your booking for verification purposes.

Where to Pick Up Your Car

Most car rental companies offer pickup services at the airport, KL Sentral, KL city centre, or at one of their branches. For added convenience, some even arrange for direct delivery to your hotel - simply schedule a suitable time with the company and a representative will meet you in the hotel lobby to pass over the keys. Make sure that you check thoroughly for existing dents or scratches (if any) and take plenty of photographs as you’ll be charged for any damage incurred while you were using the car.
