Best Places to Go at Night in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur

Thinking of dancing, drinking and partying the night away in Kuala Lumpur? There is no place better than Bukit Bintang – the capital’s famous avenue for shopping and entertainment. Changkat Bukit Bintang is the go-to avenue for the newest, most popular watering holes but several close-by avenues also play host to some pretty cool hotspots, like Havana Bar & Grill along Lorong Sahabat, off Changkat Bukit Bintang.

Whether you are looking for a live music scene, a posh see-and-be-seen nightclub like Frangipani, or an opulent rooftop bar like Rootz Rooftop Bar, Bukit Bintang has it all. The city’s after-hours scene is pretty fluid with clubs coming and going all the time, but we’ve come up with a list of those along this strip with some serious staying power.

  • Located along the main block of Changkat Bukit Bintang, Havana Bar & Grill is a restaurant and nightclub that celebrates the Latin American spirit. Looking like a colourful Cuban-style hacienda in a tropical rainforest, it is set in an elegant 1950s mansion and divided into three bright and colourful areas – the main outdoor bar, back patio, and upstairs lounge.

Even if you are not the type to get down to the beats of the club’s salsa music, you will be foot-tapping the night away to the sounds of samba, bachata and disco hits – additionally, a live salsa band and dance shows on certain nights keep partiers moving till late. The vibe here is relaxed and intimate, and besides island-inspired drinks, the kitchen serves up a mix of Cajun classics and Louisiana Creole specialities. Read More...

The city’s leading jazz bar, No Black Tie is an unpretentious live music venue that has been around for over 14 years now and is considered a permanent fixture on KL’s nightlife scene. Favourable acoustics make the place seem like a mini version of the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (Petronas Philharmonic Concert Hall) in KLCC.

Besides the jazz performances, it features live bands that play lively Brazilian beats as well as classic Chopin, plus quirky poetry acts and readings by local authors on special nights. Looking to classic 1920 Americana as their inspiration, a nondescript pathway and heavy wooden front doors lead to a venue with the look and feel of an intimate speakeasy. Laidback and casual, local and visiting jazz performers play for a sophisticated, appreciative crowd. Read More...

    Twenty.one Kitchen +Bar

It is hard to resist twenty.one kitchen + bar – after all, who could keep away from a place that lets you dance until 03:00 and pull out your best interpretive dance routines? Groove to R&B beats, acid techno or best of 80s hits – it all depends on the DJ’s mood, and is what makes the club such a fun dance spot.

KL-ites rave about the award-winning food, but we’d rather talk about the club’s decor – posh yet inviting, lots of steel, glass and mirrors will quickly turn this into your favourite place to unwind with friends. We also love its themed parties – Wednesdays and Thursdays are ladies nights, when girls drink free designer cocktails from 21:00 to 03:00.

Opulence – thy name is Rootz Rooftop Bar. A nightclub that is devoted to the idea of debonair drinking, this nightclub (topping Lot 10 mall) is a lavishly-conceived version of a Russian palace bar. Velvet drapes, thick carpeting and gilded paintings of early 19th century Renaissance revival on the walls has us instantly impressed; from the entrance hall, it opens up to a ballroom-sized 700-capacity space.

The music policy of R&B, house and remixed top 40 tunes makes it a great dance nightclub. The centrepiece here is a bar set on an elevated platform in the centre of the room and a dance floor that can accommodate up to 400 people, ensuring plenty of space to move. Read More...

An energetic, contemporary bar and diner along Pavilion KL’s al-fresco drinking and dining stretch, Tom, Dick & Harry’s Live is a live music venue continually cherry-picking and hosting some of the most exciting and eclectic live bands from around the city. Despite its limited dimensions, it has made a name for itself by hosting acoustic nights, occasional jazz shows and much-feted up-and-coming acts, making it a magnet for its music performances.

With a cosy tavern-like feel, its interior design is reminiscent of a San Francisco basement poet’s club, with buffed concrete floors, exposed pipe work and a small podium taking up centre stage. Meanwhile, walls are decked out with colourful impressions of musical instruments and funny quotes, with the occasional gig poster and vinyl record plastered up, to lend the place a hip, quirky edge. With a weekly roster of live Cuban bands, salsa dancing and Latin American music, La Boca Latin Bar & Grill is a South American-inspired ‘bistro’ that really knocks it out of the park in more ways than one. With a music policy of samba, salsa and bachata, it can be found along Pavilion KL’s al fresco stretch, beside Tom, Dick & Harry’s Live.

Expect a menu of tasty Argentinean, Brazilian, Cuban, Mexican and Peruvian food. Together with décor reminiscent of a Buenos Aires barrio, you can expect a thoroughly Latin experience. Its fun, welcoming vibe is just one of its big draws. Read More...

Qba Latin Bar & Grill is a Latin American restaurant, wine bar and cigar lounge hidden within the smart Westin Hotel KL (set along Jalan Bukit Bintang). Opened in 2003, the two-storey bar all but transports you to rustic, pre-Castro Cuba, with an interior reminiscent of Havana. Tripling as a restaurant, wine bar and cigar lounge, beers, cocktails, grilled food and good music are all on the menu here.

It is split over two floors: downstairs is the main bar area, with an island bar, cosy booths and a stage for live Latino bands, whereas upstairs is a lounge overlooking the stage. Meanwhile, outside is an al fresco tapas garden. Over the years it has attracted an elite crowd of food enthusiasts. With seafood, steaks and more represented on the menu the award-winning kitchen is most popular for succulent and tender signature steaks. Read More...
