A rooftop bar in Petaling Jaya that has mastered the art of after-hours entertainment at an altitude, The Roof is spread across 4,645sqm of space and divided into five concept venues. Set atop First Avenue, just next door to One Utama, it is home to Stratosphere, Asia’s first ‘infinity-grass’ helipad champagne bar, offering impressive 360 degree views. There is also Signature, a fine dining restaurant with a menu of Asian and international fusion-inspired cuisine, and the 37sqm Malt & Leaf, a drinking den cleverly-designed to resemble an old gentleman’s club.

Besides that, there is also a sports bar, Score, with cafeteria-style tables and chairs that sit on artificial turf, making the bar seem like a mini stadium: a huge projector screen behind the bar screens various live sporting events, including English Premier League matches. Finally there is Play, The Roof’s dance super club with giant cages where dancers pull out their best moves and a steady stream of popular local DJs who spin here, and even famous international performers such as rapper Lil Jon. Tom, Dick & Harry’s is a lively award-winning restobar in Taman Tun Dr Ismail that resembles a mix of a traditional English pub and trendy American diner. Exuding a cosy tavern-like feel, it is furnished with wooden high tables and chairs, warm lighting, and a central chalkboard at the back of the bar which highlights the kitchen’s daily specials. Aside from serving up inventive by-the-glass cocktails and on-tap beers, as well as a mean selection of hearty pub grub such as fat biscuit dogs and pork knuckles, this neighbourhood watering hole is also well-patronised by locals and tourists alike due to its top-tier, super-friendly service all night long. Highly recommended are the bar’s innovative cocktail creations, such as Boston Buillon (Maker's Mark Red Top bourbon whiskey, Marmite, agave and blueberry syrup) and Old-Fashioned (Bulleit Straight Bourbon, sugar, and angostura bitters).

    The Laundry Bar
    The Laundry Bar

When The Laundry Bar first opened in 2006, it was the toast of Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur – largely for its commendable line-up of live music band performances that drew people in from far and wide. Almost singularly responsible for popularising local indie acts from all musical genres, its centrepiece is a stage indoors (opposite the central bar) where live bands take to stage; indoor seating areas can be found around the bar or outside on the al fresco patio.

Recently, in an effort to compete with clubs that offer the same live-music focus (such as KL Live and No Black Tie), The Laundry Bar underwent a dramatic facelift that has resulted in a sleek, gentleman’s club-inspired feel – think, vintage wallpaper, chrome fixtures, Chesterfield sofas and polished wooden floors. Instead of overpriced drinks, the place truly tries to pack the highest quality DJs and performing acts, (expect to hear the best in hip hop, house, rock and more), to give patrons the most bang for their buck.

Sid’s Pub is a fairly authentic British watering hole in Petaling Jaya, where patrons can watch live football matches on the telly with a pint of ice cold beer in hand. Situated within a 30-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur city centre, Sid’s Pub is well-patronised by locals and travellers alike due to its friendly service, lively ambience, and the fact that pets are allowed indoors – a rarity in KL bars and pubs. The bar serves a wide variety of beers on tap such as Anchor, Guinness, Heineken, Kilkenny, Paulaner Munchen, Tiger and Strongbow Cider, as well as gin, vodka, rum, tequila and whiskey which are available by the glass or bottle. To complement its extensive beer offerings, Sid’s Pub also serves tantalising burgers, savoury pies, pastas, and pork ribs. Read More...

    Dukes & Duchess

A posh brasserie in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Dukes & Duchess is a lovely neighbourhood pub with a warm atmosphere. Relaxed and stylish, its interior design of bare brickwork, polished wooden floors and flattering lighting certainly has earned it a steady stream of regulars. A chameleon in some ways, it manages to easily keep up with the latest fads – during the World Cup, it has the air of a sports bar, with the latest match airing on the extra large HD flat screen and uncharacteristically-rowdy atmosphere. When we visited during Christmas it was festooned with Crimbo décor and featured a menu of the best holiday dishes – roast turkey and black pudding to name a few.

All that aside, drinks-wise the cocktails here are fresh and fruity in the main, appealing to the fairer sex, with a few more complex, grown-up options (gin-and-tonic, beer and more) available too. Service is friendly and unfussy, and the atmosphere is usually laid-back and welcoming.

When you are looking for the perfect pint in PJ, few places can rival Online Bar’s reputation. A neighbourhood pub with interior design that has remained largely unaltered since its inception in the early 90s’, expect to see faded music band posters on the walls, linoleum floors, neon beer brand signs and a large area dedicated to a pool table and dart boards. Service is super friendly with staff members who put you at ease so much that you cannot help feeling charmed.

Beer brews will be familiar, with the likes of Guiness (they are famous for pouring the best Guiness pint), Tiger and Carlsberg represented, plus you can also choose to indulge in spirits like gin and tonic, or whiskey and coke. Though it is an English pub, the kitchen puts out a surprisingly-tasty hokkien mee, plus you can also find Malaysian-bar snack specialties like pork vindaloo and wild boar curry on the menu – all of which is fantastically done.

Waikiki Bar is an al fresco Hawaiian-themed bar in Petaling Jaya that has stood the test of time since its inception in the mid-90s. Tucked away in PJ Palms Sports Centre, the bar is a definite standout with its straw-thatched roof, Tiki-style bar with bamboo walls, rattan high chairs and fairy lights strung up in the surrounding palm trees. The bar attracts a steady clientele of expats and business executives during weekends, with a rotating roster of live bands as entertainment. For drinks, the bar serves the standard array of beers, gin and tonic, whiskey and coke, though the tropical Waikiki Breeze (vodka, blue Curacao and coconut milk) is a must-try for cocktail lovers.
