Antipodean Cafe is a quaint and hip restaurant along Jalan Telawi 2 in Bangsar that draws in a large crowd for its all-day breakfast menu. A great place for a long, leisurely meal, it has become one of the most talked-about eateries in the city and whether you are a fan of a hearty burrito wrap or healthy avocado on toast, its food definitely impresses.

We love thir quirky menu, scribbled with colourful chalk on one blackboard-style wall. The food ticks all the right boxes, with super tasty western standards available like pizzas and pastas, but most visitors opt for the kitchen’s brekky offerings. Standouts on the menu include the RM18 classic all-day breakfast, a combo plate of crispy buttered toast, pan-fried sausages, baked beans, scrambled eggs and grilled tomatoes. Read More...

    Ril's Steakhouse
    Ril's Steakhouse

A restaurant to write home about, Ril’s Steakhouse has to contend with several popular eateries in its vicinity, but almost none capture the same elusive charm of this chandeliered, baroque-style eatery.

When it comes to the food, excess is the name of the game here, with dishes like the famous 50 ounce porterhouse, a sizable chunk of meat able to feed two, and the crispy pan-fried chicken casserole, served on a bed of braised spinach and sweet potato. However, do not stop at just those two dishes, we recommend you go for it all – the food here is a singular Bangsar experience that is worth having.

    Fierce Curry House
    Fierce Curry House

Some say it is the best place for banana leaf in the city, and we certainly think the food at Fierce Curry House lives up to its reputation. Characteristic of KL’s Indian dining scene, the restaurant’s interior design is simple and unpretentious, so the food takes the limelight. The menu encompasses dishes from all over India, with the most popular choice being the RM6 banana leaf rice (which comes with four vegetables and all the trimmings), which goes great with the restaurant’s classic side dishes such as chicken tikka masala, mutton varuval and tandoori tiger prawns.

However, the ultimate reason to visit is to try the Hyderabad dum beriyani, a pot of perfectly-seasoned Basmati rice, with spices and meat heaped on to create a dish that is satisfying from start to finish. If rice is not your thing, then try the roti nutella, a fluffy, buttery flatbread with melted chocolate filling; wash it all down with a mango lassi, a refreshing blend of mango juice, spices and yoghurt.

Hitting all the right notes both musically and food-wise, Mezze Bistro & Lounge easily makes the list for its award-winning formula of eclectic entertainment, fantastic food and the best restaurant service in the city. Perfect for all occasions, it is a favourite business networking haunt, but the restaurant’s intimate, relaxed interior design and atmosphere make it a great place for date nights too.

The menu is a fusion of Italian, French, Greek and North African flavours – everything is done superbly well but do not miss out on the hearty Mezze burger that has us coming back time and time again.

Above the dining room is the lounge where you will hear a mix of ballads, beach music, blues, smooth jazz and samba: on Friday and Saturday night there is a live band that plays jazz and R&B. Read More...

    Prime at Le Meridien
    Prime, Le Meridien Hotel

Paradise for meat lovers, Prime is a steakhouse in Le Meridien Hotel with a steady clientele who come not only for its great cuts of meat, generously portioned to indulge the heartiest of appetites, but also its low-key romantic setting, perfect for dates.

The hotel is set right beside KL Sentral station, making it easily accessible. The award-winning kitchen, helmed by Chef Antoine, has a menu that does not just encompass steaks – there are classic western dishes available, but it is their steaks which deserve star billing. Ranging from bone-in cuts to slabs of differing marbling and gradients, the meats are imported from Australia, Japan, Argentina and USA. Our favourite is the prime rib in a light black truffle jus – a welcome treat for carnivores, it is a hefty slab of meat done up lightly-crisp on the outside and deep pink on the inside, making for bite after bite of tender, juicy and buttery-tasting beef.

Each dish at Nosh, a fusion restaurant on Jalan Telawi 3 bangsar, has a quirky east-meets-west theme going on. For example, the Malay-style ayam masak merah (spicy tomato gravy chicken) sits on a bed of cous cous. There is also the penne rendang, cylinder-shaped pasta pieces with lamb slivers seasoned with Malay spices - a fun dish packed with lots of flavour. Popular among locals and tourists, prices are pretty reasonable, starting at only RM32 for a main course.

Besides the main meals, Nosh's kitchen puts out exquisite sweet treats that will have you coming back time and time again. Sate your sugar cravings with the highly recommended fruity pavlova.

The award-winning, spacious The Ming Room in Bangsar Shopping Centre is a Cantonese fine-dining restaurant that repeatedly garners positive reviews for its classic dishes with contemporary touches. Very popular, particularly for its Hong Kong dim sum selections, it features six exclusive banquet rooms that can accommodate up to 300 people.

Opened in 2003, the menu is vast with signature dishes given western fusion touches. We like the baked foie gras with stuffed sea clams, crispy prawns with soft shell crab in honeydew, steamed freshwater prawns with radish cake and river carp medallion in stock. Service is speedy, and there is even a pricey and predominantly-Australian wine list. Read More...

Considered an institution on Kuala Lumpur’s food scene, Jarrod & Rawlins is an award winning western restaurant in Bangsar with a well-deserved, glowing reputation for its British-inspired food. Pulling in a steady crowd, breakfast is particularly popular – our favourite is J & R’s breakfast, a combo of rich and flavourful pork sausage and crispy and savoury bacon rashers, mushrooms, runny sunny-side up eggs, grilled tomatoes and two slices of homemade toast.

Drinks-wise, characteristic of a British pub, beers rule the menu with brews like Guinness, Tiger Heineken and more available, but we highly recommend the spicy Bloody Mary, the perfect complement to the kitchen’s breakfast offerings. Their specialty is meat available in all varieties, with a lot of people visiting the in-house butcher’s deli to take away the ‘homemade’ pork, chicken, beef and lamb sausages, as well as kebabs and pies! An award-winning Italian restaurant in Bangsar Village, Garibaldi has found the simple formula for success – food utilising quality ingredients, reasonable prices, great views and comfortable, trendy interior design. Helming its kitchen is Executive Chef Giuliano Berta, who puts out dishes of peerless, modern Italian food. Our all-time favourite is roasted lamb (RM90), loin seasoned with herbs, on a bed of breaded juicy Portobello mushrooms and red wine sauce.

Finish off your meal on a sweet note, with one of Chef Giuliano’s desserts – standouts include the tiramisu (RM25), as well as cioccolato (RM28), a warm molten lava chocolate cake with smooth hazelnut gelato and sharp-tasting raspberry coulis. Service is faultless and the wine list at Garibaldi is extensive, with reds and whites to cater to all budgets; there is a bar above the dining room. Read More...

A bakery, restaurant and a wine bar combo along Jalan Telawi 2, Yeast Bistronomy is a quaint, French-themed eatery by restaurateur Christophe Chatron-Michaud and his Malaysian wife, Lissan Teh. Its dine-in menu focuses on French cuisine given Asian touches, like grilled bamboo king prawn with saffron risotto and seared Hokkaido scallop. Also good is mesclun lardons (egg salad) and their quiche Lorraine.

At the bakery, madeleines and macaroons are great, but the astonishingly soft and flavoursome artisan French breads, ranging from its bestseller almond croissant to the rare smoked duck cheese puff has christened this our all-time favourite tea-time haunt in KL. What’s more, if you happen to be here after 17:00, you are entitled for 30% discount on all bread items! Read More...
