The airy and spacious The Curve is a sprawling strip mall set 15km west of Kuala Lumpur, in Mutiara Damansara PJ. Under its roof are more than 200 shops, including British big-box retailer Debenhams and British India, plus local boutiques. A combination of indoor and outdoor shopping spaces, it is best known for its flea market which takes place on Saturday and Sunday every week along its open-air walkway, The Street.

Just past The Street is e@Curve, an entertainment complex with a cinema, and several international and local boutiques: opposite both buildings is Swedish furniture superstore Ikea, and next door is British multinational grocer Tesco. The collection of al fresco restaurants here are the best reason to visit; in fact one of its bars, Laundry Bar, makes our list of Top 10 Nightlife in Petaling Jaya. It plays host to up-and-coming local bands and even a popular monthly Popcorn & Soda Sunday afternoon film sessions, where French films and shorts by local film-makers are showcased. Read More...

Swedish furniture superstore Ikea is certainly a popular fixture in PJ’s shopping scene – if you visit during the weekends, expect to encounter massive crowds and to wait in line for at least 20 minutes when purchasing anything. Those negative factors aside, it is the one of the best places to obtain fashionable, great value household merchandise like bookshelves, sofas and lighting fixtures. They have an onsite restaurant which serves up Ikea’s iconic Swedish meatballs in specialty gravy – it is a popular afternoon lunch and dinner spot and finding a table can be difficult, but the food is well worth the bustle.

Directly connected via a ground floor tunnel link is Ikano Power Centre next door, a neighbourhood mall with Australian electrical giant Harvey Norman as its anchor tenant and plenty of indie boutiques to keep serious shoppers occupied perusing its racks. Meanwhile, IPC is accessible to The Curve and e@Curve through a first floor connection bridge.

The impressively-themed Sunway Pyramid is a retail landmark in Bandar Sunway spread across 1.7 million sq ft. The only mall in Malaysia with an ice skating rink, the pyramid-shaped complex first opened in 1997 and sports elaborate Egyptian interior design, ranging from a giant sphinx standing guard at the entrance, to pseudo-hieroglyphics decorating its exterior façade and numerous faux-Pharaoh statues.

Full of character, it is divided into two sections (Old and P-2 wings) with anchor tenants such as Giant, Jusco Supermarket and Parkson Grand. Expect to find high-end labels such as Coach, Calvin Klein and Mango in the Old wing. Meanwhile the P-2 section has an array of quirky independent stores, including a Moroccan-inspired bazaar and an area dedicated to Asian high street trends. Entertainment-wise there is a standard 12-screen movie theatre and bowling alley, plus quirky offerings such as an archery range and an indoor ice skating rink. Just next door is Sunway Lagoon Theme Park. Read More...

Locals know it best as ‘the mall right beside PJ’s A&W fast food restaurant’ but this is certainly not Amcorp Mall’s only claim to fame. It has been around since the late 90s, and is most popular for its weekly flea market on the ground floor of the indoor complex. Said to be the first flea market in Malaysia, expect to find stalls retailing weird and wonderful merchandise – from old LP records to antique collectibles.

Amcorp Mall is more than just a mall; it is like a little slice of history: under its roof you will find an eclectic collection of storefronts, from quirky local boutiques and shops, to second-hand bookstores and music stores. Our favourite is the cluttered British-style Joe’s MAC, an uninhibited music junkshop dedicated to music memorabilia with over 9,000 vinyl records, band posters, a colourful collection of guitars, cellos, turntables, CDs and cassettes that are sure to grab your attention.

Opened in 2008, the four-storey Tropicana City Mall is a new addition to Petaling Jaya’s roster of shopping centres. While you will find the usual chain department stores such as US bookstore giant Borders and neighbourhood grocery store Giant, the mall also has a bounty of fashion boutiques under its roof. Expect to find well-recognised labels such as Malaysian ladies apparel chain Nichii, Kitschen and Esprit, as well as indie boutiques such as Mirrorcle and Mazza Korean Collection.

Food-wise, the options are almost endless with fast food chains such as pizza restaurant Papa John’s, Nando’s and Kenny Rogers Roasters, plus you will also find one-of-a-kind eateries like Three Little Pigs and The Big Bad Wolf, whose kitchen puts out supremely tasty, pork-centric dishes. When it come leisure offerings the mall keeps you entertained with an eight-screen movie theatre, fitness complex, kids Gymboree and massage centre onsite. Read More...

A new suburban mall with over 100 fashion stores, a cinema, gym, games arcade and more than 50 restaurants, Paradigm Mall is a neighbourhood shopping centre housing a variety of mid-market international brands like Dorothy Perkins and Springfield, and local boutiques like Kitschen, Nichii, Syarakim and Tangoo. Not only that, if you are looking for quirky, inexpensive clothes and fashion accessories, the kiosks beside the escalators come highly recommended, offering great bargains especially if you barter.

Very family-friendly, Paradigm Mall even has zones designed just for kids with playgrounds and toy stores; anchor tenants include Tesco, Padini, Uniqlo, Marks & Spencer and Harvey Norman. Besides that, there are shops for digital stuff like cameras, phones, laptops and restaurants specialising in local food, Asian and western food. Read More...

The 700,000sqft SSTWO Mall is a relatively unknown, but slowly gaining popularity, neighbourhood shopping centre in Petaling Jaya serving the nearby SS2 and SS17 residential areas. The four-storey complex houses over 200 retail spaces, with brands such as chain department store FOS, Caring Pharmacy and health supplement superstore GNC represented. On the Lower Ground Floor is grocery marketplace Urban Food, the mall’s main anchor tenant, plus there is a fitness centre, Thai massage centre and DIY superstore.

When it comes to food, the mall’s collection of offerings is vast indeed – you will find kitchens that put out local and western food: we recommend the al fresco strip with dining options such as Beer Hive, Grumps and J Tean Kitchen. In addition to your meal you will get to enjoy live music band performances and shows. Read More...

Set in Section 14 of Petaling Jaya, Jaya 33 is an office tower and lifestyle centre combo best known for its array of award-winning restaurants, most noticeably Coliseum Cafe & Grill Room, the ‘longest operating western colonial-themed bistro in Malaysia’ (according to the Malaysia Book of Records), and Noble Mansion. Targeting a middle-income market the place has an open-air concept, with neighbourhood hypermarket Jaya Grocer as its anchor tenant.

Opened in 2011 it is a pretty quirky outdoor mall spread across four acres and divided into three blocks (Towers 1, 2 and 3), with cool boutiques and eateries that cater to all ages. You will not find fashion stores here – rather the mall specialises in indie shops such as bed and bath specialists Kinder Soap and gift store My Lamb. Entertainment-wise, those interested in pop culture memorabilia can head to Games World, plus there is a 70,000sqft Fitness First gym, and a range of day spas and beauty salons. Besides that, the mall also has a convention and exhibition centre, spread across 6,200sqft and divided into six rooms, able to fit up to 120 people in a banquet-style seating arrangement.
