Ikea and Ikano Power Centre (IPC)

Ikea and Ikano Power Centre (IPC)

Swedish furniture superstore Ikea is certainly a popular fixture in PJ’s shopping scene – if you visit during the weekends, expect to encounter massive crowds and to wait in line for at least 20 minutes when purchasing anything. Those negative factors aside, it is the one of the best places to obtain fashionable, great value household merchandise like bookshelves, sofas and lighting fixtures. They have an onsite restaurant which serves up Ikea’s iconic Swedish meatballs in specialty gravy – it is a popular afternoon lunch and dinner spot and finding a table can be difficult, but the food is well worth the bustle.

Directly connected via a ground floor tunnel link is Ikano Power Centre next door, a neighbourhood mall with Australian electrical giant Harvey Norman as its anchor tenant and plenty of indie boutiques to keep serious shoppers occupied perusing its racks. Meanwhile, IPC is accessible to The Curve and e@Curve through a first floor connection bridge.

The impressively-themed Sunway Pyramid is a retail landmark in Bandar Sunway spread across 1.7 million sq ft. The only mall in Malaysia with an ice skating rink, the pyramid-shaped complex first opened in 1997 and sports elaborate Egyptian interior design, ranging from a giant sphinx standing guard at the entrance, to pseudo-hieroglyphics decorating its exterior façade and numerous faux-Pharaoh statues.

Full of character, it is divided into two sections (Old and P-2 wings) with anchor tenants such as Giant, Jusco Supermarket and Parkson Grand. Expect to find high-end labels such as Coach, Calvin Klein and Mango in the Old wing. Meanwhile the P-2 section has an array of quirky independent stores, including a Moroccan-inspired bazaar and an area dedicated to Asian high street trends. Amcorp Mall

Locals know it best as ‘the mall right beside PJ’s A&W fast food restaurant’ but this is certainly not Amcorp Mall’s only claim to fame. It has been around since the late 90s, and is most popular for its weekly flea market on the ground floor of the indoor complex. Said to be the first flea market in Malaysia, expect to find stalls retailing weird and wonderful merchandise – from old LP records to antique collectibles.

Amcorp Mall is more than just a mall; it is like a little slice of history: under its roof you will find an eclectic collection of storefronts, from quirky local boutiques and shops, to second-hand bookstores and music stores. Our favourite is the cluttered British-style Joe’s MAC, an uninhibited music junkshop dedicated to music memorabilia with over 9,000 vinyl records, band posters, a colourful collection of guitars, cellos, turntables, CDs and cassettes that are sure to grab your attention.
