Best places to shop in Chow Kit

Our guide to the Top 5 Shopping spots in Chow Kit is an up-to-date list of the best places in the area to grab great bargains. Some might think Chow Kit’s atmospheric streets would have not much in the way of retail pleasures, but in reality this is one of the best places in the city to grab wholesale bargains.

Toy stores are especially prevalent, as well as shops retailing ladies handbags and wallets and, the best part about these shops is that if you buy in bulk, you will most certainly receive discounts. Generally, prices here are about 10% - 15% cheaper than even the Petaling Street Market, and store owners are very friendly and accommodating. Easily accessible via public transportation, the Chow Kit monorail station serves the area, set only a two-minute walk (1.9km) from Jalan Haji Hussein.

Taking place at the northern end of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Chow Kit Market is divided into two sections – a wet market and dry bazaar. The area may have a notorious reputation (largely because it hosts the city’s red light district), but it is one of the liveliest and culturally enriching scenes in Kuala Lumpur.

What makes it all the more exciting is the fact that vendors are loud and pushy, which might seem daunting at first, but persist with negotiating tactics and you will be rewarded with smiles and some extras thrown in, especially if they like your bargaining skills. Shaded by oversized, colourful umbrellas in a kaleidoscope of colours, there is so much to buy here. The spice-fragranced wet market is good for specialty meats at inexpensive prices, but it is the dry section of the bazaar that is most appropriate for tourists. It is, frankly, cleaner with a maze of stalls selling fruit and vegetables as well as clothes, shoes, CDs, DVDs and textiles. Read More...

A combination of commercial lots on its lower levels and residential spaces on the upper floors, you will have access to seven stories of fashion accessories, clothes, costume jewellery, electronics, watches, sunglasses, perfume, souvenirs and gifts at Plaza GM. The best part about shopping in this fully air-conditioned complex is the truly inexpensive price tags you will find.

Vendors are a mix of Chinese locals and Indonesian immigrants, and they are always more than happy to bargain, but prices are already super reasonable so they do not get very much lower. The only downside is that the pathways between stores are pretty narrow, which makes for an uncomfortable window shopping experience especially during the weekends.

A standalone store along Lorong Haji Taib 3, Kedai Beg Hanna is perfect for thrifty fashionistas looking for cute, colourful and inexpensive hangbags, wallets and clutches. Offering true fashion bargains, prices for the merchandise found here is approximately 10% cheaper than those along Petaling Street, and you might even find fake label designs of brands such as Coach, Gucci and Guess.

The store stocks quite a hefty collection along the walls and on racks, and they have a fine finger on the pulse of current trends, so the handbags and clutches available are usually pretty hip. Another thing that makes shopping here such a relaxing experience is the fact that unobtrusive staff members will leave you alone as you browse, allowing you to make your selections without pressure.

A fabric and clothing store combo, Kedai Pakaian Anbus Collection makes this list largely for its gorgeous collection of fleece blankets in colourful patterns, at incredibly inexpensive prices. We saw the same fleece blankets in a department store in central KL for twice the price, so a trip down to Chow Kit is well worth it simply for these blankets alone.

The store also has a range of clothes in simple styles – think, long sleeved blouses, tights, t-shirts and kid’s pyjamas, as well as superhero and cartoon-themed school bags. It is a pretty small store, so selections are limited but the reasonably priced clothes are a good bargain.

A huge corner lot store just packed to the rafters with colourful collections of fake label wallets, clutches and handbags, we spent a fair amount of time at Kedai Beg BB Fashion Sdn Bhd. No sooner than you pick a style you like and then something more exciting is sure to catch your eye.

Prices here are about 10% to 15% cheaper than the more touristy Petaling Street so it’s well worth a visit. We bought a ‘Coach’ zip wallet and ‘Burberry’ flap wallet for RM35 each, a structured shoulder bag for RM55 and fabric messenger bag for RM25.
