Asian Heritage Row
Hotspot in Kuala Lumpur
A section of Jalan Doraisamy gives way to a spectacular row of converted colonial buildings, named Asian Heritage Row. Marrying the contemporary with the historical, the row is filled with trendy dining and entertainment options with elegant and arresting façades that captivate the eye as well as the curiosity, many of which can’t be found anywhere else.
Located just off Jalan Sultan Ismail right next to Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur, the once-abandoned 80-year-old houses have become one of the city’s hotspots as far as exciting and vibrant nightlife is concerned. The street has a distinct European feel to it; in fact, it wouldn’t be too much to liken it to London’s Soho and Paris’ Montmartre.
The Story Behind The Row
Just a few years ago, Asian Heritage Row looked quite the opposite of how it is today. Lined with dilapidated, neglected Neo-classical structures, the street wasn’t particularly a pleasing sight to behold. A certain William Ng saw the potential in these old yet fine buildings and quickly took interest in them as he felt that it would be a shame for them to just rot into oblivion.
The buildings were renovated into aesthetically-pleasing architectural pieces while maintaining their original identity. Today, Heritage Row consists of elegant and charming restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs as the once-quiet, rundown area is transformed into a lively and happening lifestyle district.
Dining in Heritage Row
Renowned for its colourful fine-dining options, Asian Heritage Row offers a myriad of international flavours ranging from Vietnamese to Portuguese. Some of these super-stylish eateries transform into trendy nightclubs late at night.
Anchoring the Row is CoChine Lounge & Restaurant. Serving Indochine specialties consisting of Vietnamese, Laotian and Cambodian fare, striking Angkor-Wat-inspired sandstone sculptures stand at its entrance. For those with a sweet tooth, Bisou Bake Shop offers a huge selection of homemade baked goods and is most famed for its delectable and attractive cupcakes.
Serving a diverse selection of Western and Asian cuisine from Lamb Shank to Thai Radna Beef, Mojo is a one-stop destination combining restaurant, pool lounge, live performances and nightclub. Palacio serves authentic Southern French and Spanish cuisine on the first floor and tapas bar on the ground floor. For Middle Eastern and authentic Turkish cuisine including freshly-baked traditional Turkish bread, Saray offers an unpretentious, fuss-free dining experience in the midst of a lush Turkish-themed décor.
Senja Bistro introduces you to the mouthwatering delights of authentic, traditional Malay cuisine with specialties such as Rendang Tok and Otak Otak, as well as classic favourites such as satay and nasi lemak, with a distinct ‘kampung’ (Malay village) feel. That Indian Thing features Indian fare with a difference, incorporating the flavours of Italian, Spanish and Malaysian cuisine into its range of fusion dishes. A spin-off from the posh London restaurant of the same name and hugely popular with big-named celebrities, The Ivy features fusion delights specially prepared by a chef originally from the London restaurant. Priding itself on having the longest happy hours around the area, Kristao specialises in Malaccan Portuguese cuisine with an interesting selection of homemade desserts.
The Loft KL’s Tokyo Tei and Mezza Note offer the best of two worlds - the former is an upscale Japanese bistro while the latter is a sophisticated Italian restaurant - where diners can order from both sets of menus. Even though they are located back-to-back, the eateries are different in terms of ambience and design concept. For a truly typical Malaysian culinary experience, Buharry Bistro is the neighbourhood’s ‘Mamak’ restaurant, serving a variety of local favourites and popular hawker specialties.
Heritage Row Nightlife
Playing techno to Latin beats, the nightclubs lining Asian Heritage Row are a sophisticated bunch, with mesmerising neon lights on the outside and caverns of pure energy within. Known as the city’s hottest party central, Asian Heritage Row is the place to be seen, with the added hip factor of colonial heritage.
Located right at the beginning of Asian Heritage Row, within the same building housing CoChine Lounge & Restaurant, the trendy Bar Savanh has rightfully won various accolades including JUICE Malaysia’s ‘Best Bar of the Year’, while the stylish W Wine Room next door has been voted ‘Best Wine Bar in Kuala Lumpur’ by KLUE magazine. Aside from an extensive dining menu, Mojo also has regular live performances from both foreign and local acts, as well as deejays – both in-house and guest – spinning tunes from R & B to Retro music.
The Loft KL’s three nightclubs - Upstairs, SPACE and Cynna - feature a unique clubbing experience, with house deejays presenting clubbers with a groovy blend of house, techno, progressive, R & B and disco. Featuring a décor that is a tribute to Southern Mexico’s Mayan heritage, Sunshine Classic Bar is an unpretentious club with a live band playing lively sets from Top 40 hits to retro classics. Formerly known as Atrium, Blanc Le Club grabs your attention and interest with its chic and minimalist pure-white façade and futuristic interior.
