What To Do At Night In Jalan P. Ramlee

Jalan P. Ramlee nightlife is best described as the eccentric alternative to Changkat Bukit Bintang, with glitzy cocktail lounges, tropical-themed bars and pubs, as well as chic nightclubs lining the streets of bustling Kuala Lumpur city centre. Incredibly convenient, this nightlife district is accessible within a 10-minute walk from the Petronas Twin Towers and five-star accommodations such as Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

A lively and vibrant bar-hopping street, nightlife in Jalan P. Ramlee is always packed with backpackers, business travellers, expats, and a handful of locals by 21:00. Many of these venues also host live bands playing radio-friendly covers and DJs spinning a medley of electro, hip-hop, and retro tunes. Considered as one of the city’s hottest locales, Jalan P. Ramlee is a good place to be if you want to unwind with a pint of ice-cold beer without straying too far from KL city centre.

M8 Bar

Situated just ten minutes from GTower Hotel, M8 Bar is an ultra-modern spot that’s famed for its extensive cocktail creations and stylish garden terrace overlooking Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC Park. This monochrome-themed bar is fitted with high tables and chairs in its indoor bar area while white-hued lounge seats adorn the garden terrace section. Catering to a more mature and sophisticated clientele, M8 Bar’s unobtrusive music policy ranges from jazz and R&B to Top 40 hits. While drinks are slightly pricier than most bars located within KLCC, its signature cocktails are very well-crafted; try the Mora Anatomy (Angostura 7 years, Galliano, Frangelico, Earl Grey tea, vanilla syrup, lemon juice, and blackberry jam).

Set just down the road from Rum Jungle and Beach Club, Poppy Collection is a group of four bars under one roof along Jalan P Ramlee. A mega-nightclub all about dancing and creative cocktails, it was prominent on the city’s nightlife scene for many years until it closed its doors in 2011 for extensive refurbishment, eventually reopening in late 2012 with a cleaner, simpler design and layout. Made up of Poppy Garden, Mandalay Lounge, Passions and Havanita Cigar Lounge, most people simply refer to the nightclub as Poppy’s: a door charge of RM50 (after 22:30 – there is no cover charge if you dine at Poppy Garden) gains you access to all its outlets. Easily exuding a glitzy and glamorous vibe, Sultan’s Lounge is a cocktail lounge in Mandarin Oriental Hotel KL. A favourite place for the who’s who of Kuala Lumpur to mix and mingle, due to its underground location in the basement of the hotel it has a hidden, mysterious feel. The colour scheme is primarily white but neon lights wash the place in pink, purple, blue and orange hues throughout the night. Designed by Stephane Dupoux (creator of hip restaurants such as Buddha Bar in New York), some say it looks like an Arabic desert prince’s tent but to us it looks ultra modern with polished wooden floors and sheer white flowing fabric hanging from the ceiling in fan-like fashion.
