Where to Stay in Petaling Jaya
Editor's Guide to Recommended Hotels in Petaling Jaya
12 km southwest of the city centre, Petaling Jaya is a sprawling suburb of KL divided into numerous sections and is notably defined by its mammoth shopping centres such as 1Utama, IPC, Ikea, Sunway Pyramid and The Curve. It was originally conceived as an overspill suburb for KL and provided low-cost housing for out-of-towners who flocked to the city to find work in the 1970s. These days with a population of several hundred thousand, PJ’s known mostly to locals for its variety of ‘imported’ gastronomy. Main areas include State (the closest thing PJ has to a municipal centre), Damansara Utama (which plays host to several nightclubs that stay open late) and SS2, that is known for its Monday-night market.
