1 Utama is one of the Klang Valley’s most popular shopping centres. An expansive mall in Bandar Utama (a small suburb just off the Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong), it is about 30 minutes away from KL city centre and has over 650 stores and a variety of restaurants and entertainment outlets. Spread across five million-sqft, it is locally known as 1U and is divided into two wings: the Old Wing and New Wing. Recently the Old Wing was given a thorough revamp that saw the addition of new stores, a glossy and sleek façade plus there is even a third-floor entertainment zone (similar to the one on the New Wing) in the Read More...

Located near an A & W fast-food outlet on Persiaran Barat, just off Jalan Timur, is the Amcorp Mall. Although not as fancy as its more contemporary counterparts, this mall has its legions of regular and loyal patrons who love to come here for its sizeable offerings of quirky and specialty shops.

During the weekends, the whole of its ground floor comes alive with its flea market, arguably one of the most talked-about in the country. Said to be the very first flea market in Malaysia, it showcases a wide range of items from old LP records to antique collectables.

  • Highlights: Ultimate Toys, Ka Fei Dian, Creative Cottage, Antiques and Collectibles
  • Opening Hours: Daily, 10:00 – 22:00

Empire Shopping Gallery is a stylish lifestyle mall in Subang Jaya. Housing over 180 stores, it is a clean, organised and upscale complex similar to Bangsar Shopping Centre. Also known as ESG, the six-storey mall was the recipient of the Malaysia Property Award in 2011. An elegant structure with beautiful outdoor landscaping, the rectangular-shaped shopping centre features a simple layout and you can see clear across the mall from one end to the other. The skylight lets plenty of natural light in, making the air-conditioned complex bright and airy. Read More...

If you are tired of donning fashion items that are two or three seasons too late, then head to F Block. Doing roaring trade in reasonably priced, good quality, bold and bight apparel and accessories, F Block is one of our favourite local boutiques, offering an unfailingly cool collection of clothes, shoes and jewellery in step with the current season’s fashion styles. Founded in 2007, the label has several stores in KL, Selangor, and Malacca. We like the welcoming Sunway Giza store – it is a little bigger than its counterparts in KL and as a result carries a wider selection of items and sizes. Read More...

Ikea and Ikano Power Centre (IPC)

Swedish furniture superstore Ikea is certainly a popular fixture in PJ’s shopping scene – if you visit during the weekends, expect to encounter massive crowds and to wait in line for at least 20 minutes when purchasing anything. Those negative factors aside, it is the one of the best places to obtain fashionable, great value household merchandise like bookshelves, sofas and lighting fixtures. They have an onsite restaurant which serves up Ikea’s iconic Swedish meatballs in specialty gravy – it is a popular afternoon lunch and dinner spot and finding a table can be difficult, but the food is well worth the bustle.

Directly connected via a ground floor tunnel link is Ikano Power Centre next door, a neighbourhood mall with Australian electrical giant Harvey Norman as its anchor tenant and plenty of indie boutiques to keep serious shoppers occupied perusing its racks. Meanwhile, IPC is accessible to The Curve and e@Curve through a first floor connection bridge.

Paradigm Mall is a new suburban mall with over 100 fashion stores, a nine-screen movie theatre, gym, games arcade and more than 50 restaurants. The layout is pretty similar to malls in the Golden Triangle area (like Pavilion KL and Suria KLCC), but that’s where the resemblance ends. Shopping is great here: Paradigm Mall has mid-market international brands like Dorothy Perkins and Springfield, and local boutiques like Kitschen, Nichii, Syarakim and Tangoo. But it is the indoor activities that make it unique – you can catch a movie, sweat it out at the gym, play a silly round of foosball with your friends at the arcade, enjoy a ticklish fish Read More...

Sunway Pyramid is an impressively-themed shopping centre in the Klang Valley. Located in Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, it is the only mall in Malaysia with an ice skating rink. Opened in 1997, the distinctive retail landmark is one of the largest shopping centres in the country. Whether you think it is tacky or sophisticated, it is one of Malaysia’s most elaborate malls, with an Egyptian-inspired giant sphinx standing guard at the entrance, a monumental pyramid-shaped main complex, pseudo-hieroglyphics decorating its exterior façade and numerous faux-Pharaoh statues. Filled with character, the mall’s anchor tenants are Giant, Jusco Supermarket and Parkson Grand but its real draw is its array of independent stores. Read More...
