  • 1 Utama Shopping Mall in Kuala Lumpur

    Petaling Jaya Shopping

1 Utama is one of the Klang Valley’s most popular shopping centres. An expansive mall in Bandar Utama (a small suburb just off the Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong), it is about 30 minutes away from KL city centre and has over 650 stores and a variety of restaurants and entertainment outlets.

Spread across five million-sqft, it is locally known as 1U and is divided into two wings: the Old Wing and New Wing. Recently the Old Wing was given a thorough revamp that saw the addition of new stores, a glossy and sleek façade plus there is even a third-floor entertainment zone (similar to the one on the New Wing) in the works.

  • Adjacent to 1 Utama is the five-star One World Hotel and high-rise offices such as Plaza IBM, KPMG Tower and 1 First Avenue. The mall itself is separated into two sections by the SkyBridge: the older section of 1U houses its original anchor tenant, Jusco, while the newer section has the Parkson Grand department. Singapore department store Tangs is due to set up shop in the Old Wing sometime in 2012, spanning across three floors.

Also in the Old Wing, beside the Jusco Supermarket, is the revamped food court; here you can find everything from sushi, sahimi and soba noodles to rotisserie chicken and doughnuts.

The Old Wing of 1 Utama has the usual retail suspects with a mixture of high-end brands like Guess, Bershka, Morgan de Toii, Fossil, Bobbi Brown, The Body Shop, Nike, Levis, Puma, Uniqlo, plus local brands such as Poh Kong, Romp, Sasa, Tomei and others.

However, the newly renovated section of the mall’s most popular addition is the huge, ultra colourful Candylicious store. The perfect place for kids, a sweet time is guaranteed to be had by all. Also inside here is a branch of popcorn specialists, Garret’s: a Chicago brand founded in 1949, this is the first of its stores in Malaysia. Around the corner from Candylicious is a strip of restaurants including Carl’s Jr, Dave’s Deli, The Chicken Rice Shop and more.

Meanwhile the New Wing of 1 Utama is divided in themed zones: Highstreet, Oval, Sportszone and Entertainment Zone making it easy to get around in. Highstreet has edgy fashion labels and designer collection marques such as Accessorize & Monsoon, Adidas, CK by Calvin Klein, Coach, FCUK, A/X By Armani Exchange, DKNY and more.

Directly opposite Highstreet is the Oval, one of the largest promotional spaces to be offered in a Malaysian shopping centre. Around this section you will find a collection of affordable boutique fashion brands such as Nose, Padini, Hang Ten and more.

There are many restaurants at 1 Utama. If you are looking for cheap eats then there are two food courts in 1U: the first is in the Old Wing besides Jusco supermarket and the other is on the second floor of the New Wing, beside A&W. both these places serve reasonably-priced, local food plus some Asian specialties.

However if you are looking for more upscale restaurants then try Delicious Café, Delifrance, Dave’s Deli, Carl’s Jr, TGIF, Kluang Station, Nyonya Colours and more in the Old Wing. Or head to the first floor of the New Wing where you can find Chilli’s Bar & Grill, Canton-I, Dragon-I, Italiannies and Jack’s Place): these places see more customers.

One of the unique features at 1 Utama is the Rainforest – a specially conceived area at the centre of the mall, surrounded by al fresco cafés and restaurants, with koi ponds, a suspension bridge and lush greenery.

Here is where you will find one of the mall’s noteworthy attractions – the 30,000sqft Secret Garden, the largest rooftop garden in Southeast Asia: it is a popular tourist attraction with over 500 species of exotic flora. Outside you can find more al fresco restaurants and bars: come nightfall the nightlife scene here really comes alive.

Opposite the Oval at 1 Utama is the Entertainment Zone: dedicated to movie buffs, gamers and karaoke enthusiasts, it occupies a large section of the third and fourth floor and plays host to the state-of-the-art 13-screen Golden Screen Cinemas, CrossFire gaming arcade and Neway karaoke centre. Sharing the same floor is the 36-lane U-Bowl bowling centre.

The mall also houses a Celebrity Fitness gym and Camp5, Asia's largest indoor rock climbing outfit. Also at the rooftop level are the ‘It's a Hit!’ baseball batting cages and the Padang futsal court which plays host to five futsal courts. The mall’s range of entertainment offerings does not end there: outdoor enthusiasts will be glad to know that there is a scuba diving centre in the Outdoor Promenade.

The mall sports a cute catch phrase – ‘It’s All in 1’ – and if truth be told it could not be a more appropriate tagline. One of KL’s most popular retail complexes, 1 Utama sees a substantial amount of shoppers at weekends, school and public holidays. Besides wheelchair access, money changers, baby strollers and kiddie cabbies, baby diaper changing rooms, umbrella deposit services and power scooters, the mall is also a Wi-Fi zone.

It is fairly easy to get to 1U: using the Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP Highway), it can be accessed from just off the main highway. Additionally, it is a ten-minute drive away from IPC (Ikano Power Centre) and The Curve – two well-known PJ malls.
