Sunway Pyramid in Kuala Lumpur

Petaling Jaya Shopping

Sunway Pyramid is an impressively-themed shopping centre in the Klang Valley. Located in Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, it is the only mall in Malaysia with an ice skating rink. Opened in 1997, the distinctive retail landmark is one of the largest shopping centres in the country.

Whether you think it is tacky or sophisticated, it is one of Malaysia’s most elaborate malls, with an Egyptian-inspired giant sphinx standing guard at the entrance, a monumental pyramid-shaped main complex, pseudo-hieroglyphics decorating its exterior façade and numerous faux-Pharaoh statues. Filled with character, the mall’s anchor tenants are Giant, Jusco Supermarket and Parkson Grand but its real draw is its array of independent stores.

Design & Layout

Spread across 1.7 million sq ft, Sunway Pyramid’s layout is quite complex, given its recent expansion and renovation: just keep in mind that from the mall’s main entrance, it extends all the way towards the front entrance of Sunway Lagoon Theme Park to the north. As long as you keep in mind that the mall is somewhat similar in design to 1Utama you will find it somewhat easy to navigate.

It is divided into two sections: the original wing and the new wing (also known as Pyramid 2 or P-2). It is only the main entrance and the stores in the old wing that boast Egyptian-design: beyond that the mall reverts back to neon lights, whitewashed walls and stores that feature their own brand of style.

The Old Wing

The main entrance leads into the ground floor of Sunway Pyramid’s old wing. This floor sees many of the mall’s high-end clothing boutiques: flanking the main entrance is Starbucks and Coach with Ms. Selfridge and Guess just opposite. These stores occupy prime real estate with plenty of foot traffic going past them everyday.

To the left of the main entrance is Elle, Dorothy Perkins, Arnold Palmer, Calvin Klien Jeans, Mango, Timberland and more, with Parkson Grand department store at the end. M.A.C, Charles & Keith, JASPAL, Springfield, Ripcurl, Crabtree & Evelyn, Crocs, Marks & Spencer and more are set up to the right of the main entrance. Meanwhile the lower ground floor has a concourse area that hosts temporary exhibitions, with boutiques scattered around it.

Entertainment

The first floor of Sunway Pyramid is pretty much aimed at teenagers. Directly above the main entrance is a sprawling Burger King outlet plus there is a variety of cool clothing stores such as DC Comics Apparel, Tropicana Life and other local boutiques.

Additionally, there is Stars Archery, an archery range, a bowling alley, and a TGIF restaurant on this level. Above this floor is the 12-screen TGV Sunway Pyramid movie theatre. Euphoria, Ministry Of Sound, one of KL’s most popular nightclubs is a 10-minute walk away from Sunway Pyramid, accessible via the ground floor.

Pyramid 2 (P-2)

A newer wing called Pyramid 2 (or P-2) was added in 2007: within this area are major department stores such as Jusco, Giant Supermarket, Harvey Norman, Popular bookstore, plus a host of smaller retailers.

On the lower ground floor 2 of P-2 is Marrakesh, a Moroccan-inspired indoor ‘bazaar’. But it does not feature exclusively middle eastern-themed stores; rather there is a mixture of shops like Tarbush Express and the very Chinese Chicken Rice Shop restaurant.

On the first floor of this wing is an area called the Asian Avenue: featuring retro and Goth style, it has the latest in Asian high street trends, plus some restaurants specialising in Asian food.

Restaurants & Ice Skating Rink

Pyramid Ice Rink, is on the lower ground floor of the old wing in Sunway Pyramid. Most restaurants (both high end and fast food joints) are ringed around it on the ground and first floors; you can find Wendy’s, MacDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, Popeyes and more on the ground floor, while the first floor has Sushi King, Tony Romas and other restaurants.

Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa and Sunway Pyramid Tower East is accessible from Sunway Pyramid via a link bridge on the ground floor. It is easy to get to Sunway Pyramid via RapidKL buses: take U62 from Jalan Batu Tiga Lama Klang, U63 and U67 from Pasaramakota USJ 8, U76 from KL Sentral and U623 from Kelana Jaya LRT station.
