10 Great KL Nightlife Spots

Ten great Kuala Lumpur nightclubs, bars and lounges

Those who don’t know KL might be surprised by the burgeoning nightlife that can be found once you scratch beneath the surface. From swinging jazz bars and Mediterranean-inspired lounges to fashionable techno super clubs and Hawaiian-themed bars, we have chosen 10 of the best KL nightlife spots so that you will always be at the centre of a party, even when you are away from home. The city’s nightlife scene covers a lot of musical ground, so expect the best hits in a variety of genres and get ready to jam.

1. Zouk KL

A sprawling nightclub, bar, live music venue and restaurant, Zouk KL is an icon on Kuala Lumpur’s nightlife scene and has been around since 2004. Located along Jalan Ampang, it encompasses six rooms – Aristo & Rooftop Garden, Barsonic, Main Room, Phuture, Terrace Bar and Velvet Underground. At Zouk KL a rotating list of local and international DJs spin heady dance floor tracks until the wee hours and has also attracted international heavyweight headliners such as DJ Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk and David Morales in the past. We recommend the super club’s epic parties that span all six rooms like Mambo Jambo nights on Wednesday or Ghetto Heaven (ladies get in for free before midnight) on Tuesday night. Zouk KL has become a staple in the city’s clubbing scene and has developed a cult following among locals. Read More...

2. Beach Club

Set on the corner of Jalan P Ramlee and Jalan Sultan Ismail, Beach Club is probably one of KL’s most popular nightclubs. It looks a lot like a Hawaiian beach hut with an attap (thatched straw) roof and rattan furniture, and it’s divided into two areas – a dining terrace and sea view zone. You can grab a bite to eat at the dining terrace, but it’s the sea view zone where the nightly live bands play retro and commercial hits that make it so popular. It has earned itself a notorious reputation as one of the best places in the city to ‘get to meet’ working girls but that is not what really makes it all the rage. The good music makes it a groovy place to dance the night away but its central location on the corner of one of the city’s busiest streets makes it an ideal place to people-watch.

Address: 97 Jalan P Ramlee

3. Sky Bar

Airy and sexy, Sky Bar is a glamorous cocktail lounge on the 33rd floor of Traders Hotel KL. Its centrepiece is a pool bordered by ‘cabanas’ on one side, and a bar on the other. A must-visit if you are planning on hitting the nightclubs in KL, resident DJs spin techno music at Sky Bar on select nights: on other nights tunes alternate between jazz, easy listening and soft rock to modern pop hits. From Jalan Bukit Bintang, Sky Bar is approximately two km away and the easiest way to get here is to take a ten-minute taxi ride. Read More...

4. Luna Bar

Located directly opposite Menara KL Tower, the breezy Luna Bar is a two-storey bar on the 34th floor of Pacific Regency Suites that offers 360° views of the city. One of the city’s best-known nightclubs, it is divided into an alfresco lounge with a pool and long bar on the lower level, while the top deck is a trendy indoor restaurant that overlooks the pool. Combining the relaxed air of an outdoor bar and the sophistication of an indoor lounge with excellent rooftop views, Luna Bar is undoubtedly one of the city’s best nightclubs. Read More...

5. Frangipani’s

Frangipani’s is known both for its frankly opulent ground floor fine-dining restaurant (listed in Malaysian Tatler’s 2011 Best Restaurants Guide) and its LGBT-friendly nightclub upstairs. The decor below is reminiscent of a black-tie James Bond movie dining scene, with cream linen covered tables and white Raj-like columns surrounding a black pool. But it is the upstairs that has earned Frangipani’s its wild and wacky reputation and made it a legend on KL’s nightlife scene. House music is generally the type of tunes you will hear here and the crowd consists of expats and strapping young men. It went through a revamp recently and now sports a classier look, similar to the restaurant downstairs with stainless steel pillars, Chesterfield couches and lots of mirrors. But don’t worry as there is still plenty of dance floor space. Read More...

6. Sultan’s Lounge @ Mandarin Oriental Hotel KL

Easily exuding a glitzy and glamorous vibe, Sultan’s Lounge is a cocktail lounge in Mandarin Oriental Hotel KL. The colour scheme is primarily white but neon lights wash the place in pink, purple, blue and orange hues throughout the night. Designed by Stephane Dupoux (creator of hip restaurants such as Buddha Bar in New York), some say it looks like an Arabic desert prince’s tent but to us it looks ultra modern with polished wooden floors and sheer white flowing fabric hanging from the ceiling in fan-like fashion. A resident DJ plays music heavy on the bass with tunes that are a mix of pop radio hits, R&B and some ‘best of the 80s tracks, making the dance floor in front of the gold DJ console a popular space. 7. No Black Tie

No Black Tie is KL’s leading jazz bar, where some of the region's most established musicians have performed. The unpretentious bar has been around for over 14 years now and is considered an institution in the city. It is very laidback and casual, and local and visiting jazz performers play to a sophisticated, respectful crowd. Entertainment-wise, besides the jazz performances, it features live bands that play genres from lively Brazilian beats to classic Chopin, as well as quirky poetry acts and readings by local authors on special nights. The favourable acoustics make the place seem like a mini version of the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (Petronas Philharmonic Concert Hall) in KLCC. Read More...

8. Mezze

If you want to wow the socks off your date then Mezze Bistro & Lounge comes highly recommended. Don’t get us wrong, plenty of mixing and mingling with friends and business networking goes on here but the bistro’s intimate, relaxed atmosphere, makes it one of our favourite date night spots. Downstairs is a dining hall (on Friday and Saturday we recommend you book ahead as tables get snapped up pretty fast) and the stairs up to level one lead to a supremely cool lounge. Decked out like an Italian café with bare red brick walls, leather booths, Oriental-style rugs, fat naked light bulbs hanging from the ceiling and candlelit tables, the two-storey bistro has a distinctly local touch to it with some Malaysian artwork on its walls. 9. Hard Rock Cafe KL

Hard Rock Café KL is a legend on KL’s nightlife scene that opened its doors more than 21 years ago. Sitting along Jalan Sultan Ismail (right beside Concorde Hotel), it is a great place to go if you have a hankering for a burger and fries, or if you just need a good dose of classic American rock. The interior of Hard Rock Café KL is, for the most part, decorated with Rock memorabilia. The usual trademark Hard Rock style, such as glass cabinets displaying rock ‘n’ roll trivia and wait staff walking around with T-shirts full of pin badges, is evident throughout the place. 10. The Pool

Looking a lot like a 1960s Palm Springs resort, The Pool is one of the few nightclubs located along Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. It has a lovely open-air ambiance and its biggest draw is the eponymous swimming pool which acts as a centrepiece at the club. Above the water is a glass runway often used for fashion shows and product launches. There are two sitting areas: on one side of the pool is the VIP section, which has white ‘leather’ furniture on fake green grass and a barbecue pit. Meanwhile, on the other side are high tables and chairs on dark wooden boarding and pendant lighting, making it feel like a beachside bar. Between these two seating zones, the vibe fluctuates between super exclusive and very relaxed on different nights. Read More...
