Five Great French Dining in Kuala Lumpur

Ooh la la! Sure, France is the romantic, fine-dining capital of the world but Kuala Lumpur has its fair share of supremely good Parisian-style bistros and fine dining restaurants. These places are the types of restaurants you book ahead of time, look forward to visiting for days and when the moment finally arrives, you savour each second.

Our five favourites range from homey bistros to high-end splurges with dazzling food and sparkling service and they’ve captured our attention not only because of this, but also their ultra stylish design. Whether you are looking for a weekend indulgence or a date-night venue, do not miss out on a chance to visit some of the city’s best French fine dining restaurants.

One of Kuala Lumpur’s best French fine-dining restaurants, La Vie En Rose is an intimate and classy restaurant overlooking the Bukit Nanas forest reserve. Set in a converted mid-20th century bungalow along Jalan Raja Chulan it has a Parisian industrial chic look with buffed concrete floors, white brick walls, chandeliers and white tablecloth covered tables.

At the helm of La Vie En Rose’s kitchen is Toulouse-born, veteran French chef Jean Michel Fraisse (one of the city’s most successful culinary exports) and founder of the French Culinary School in Asia. The food that comes out of his kitchen is faultless, classic French cuisine with a home-cooked taste to it – expect favourites such as foie gras, bouillabaisse and coq au vin. Read More...

The elegant and refined Frangipani is no stranger to Kuala Lumpur’s nightlife scene. Set along Changkat Bukit Bintang, the place is divided into two sections: upstairs is a gay-friendly nightclub and downstairs is a restaurant.

Discreet, high class, cool, confident and sophisticated are just some of the words used to describe the main dining hall. To us, it looks like a black-tie James Bond movie dining scene with cream linen covered tables surrounding a reflecting black pool with white Raj-like columns. That the food far surpasses the décor seems almost impossible but it does – the explosion of flavours in each dish makes for an almost out-of-this-world experience. The kitchen is headed by Chef Chris Bauer and food served is creative, fusion-style French dishes. Read More...

Set in a converted three-storey mansion along Jalan Changkat Kia Peng, Maison Francaise (French House) is a French fine-dining restaurant with a romantic, vintage feel. With a classic Rolls Royce parked on the driveway out front and an interior design of white walls, terrazzo floors, modern crystal chandeliers and white tablecloth-covered tables, the decor is indisputably classy.

It is separated into three areas: a private cigar lounge, main dining hall with a patio and an al fresco dining section surrounding a swimming pool. Heading the kitchen is executive chef Franck Lamache, who used to work in Les Ambassadeurs and Le Taillevent – Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris. Serving French food (with an emphasis on southern French dishes) the food is without a doubt tasty: they serve different complimentary amuse bouches every night. Read More...

Bistro a Table is a classic French brasserie located about 20 minutes away from the city centre, in Petaling Jaya. The ever-changing menu is short but everything is prepared and executed with such flair that you won’t notice the small selection: signature dishes (such as the coddled maple syrup egg) stay on the menu throughout the year. Sure, this restaurant is more of a homey Parisian bistro than a fine-dining restaurant, but the food is just so good that it would be a travesty not to include it on our list. A stronghold of classic French comfort food, behind the scenes in the kitchen is the hip chef Isadora Chai, who uses local ingredients to keep dishes affordable. Read More...

    Nathalie's Gourmet Studio
    Nathalie's Gourmet Studio

Located in Solaris Dutamas, Nathalie’s Gourmet Studio is run by the chic, award-winning Chef Nathalie Arbefeuille. The restaurant decor is modern and trendy with royal purple bucket chairs and white table cloth covered tables, but limited number of seats means you will have to book ahead if you want to enjoy a meal here. Food served is a variety of creative French dishes – some of which have Asian influences and the menu changes monthly. We love almost everything served but Nathalie’s macaroons deserve special mention, so save room for dessert!
