5 Great Hotels in KL Shopping Malls

Hotels Attached to Shopping Malls

Move over Paris and Milan because when it comes to shopping, everything is bigger in Kuala Lumpur. Home to three of the world's largest malls and ranked the fourth-best shopping destination in the world, malls here are more than just shopping venues, they are the go-to spots where locals hang out and have fun.

Whether you are the in-and-out type (you know what you want, where to find it and would like to be on your way ASAP, thank-you-very-much) or the sort to enjoy leisurely strolling through well-lit retail centres, KL is the place for you. Putting you close to the retail action, our five great hotel-mall selections are either attached to or above the city’s biggest malls – the best way to go on a shopping spree and still attend that morning board meeting or enjoy an afternoon sunbathing session.

1. Mandarin Oriental - Suria KLCC

The imposing six-storey Suria KLCC can be likened to Manhattan's Barney's and Saks Fifth Avenue. Home to over 400 luxury labels and fashion houses, on-site activities include tourist attractions such as the Aquaria KLCC oceanarium, Petrosains science discovery centre, Malaysia's first concert hall and the Petronas Art Gallery.

Providing you direct access to Suria KLCC is luxury hotel brand Mandarin Oriental, one of KL's glitziest hotels, that sits between KLCC Park and the Petronas Twin Towers. The five-star property has 602 rooms with Asian artwork and plush furnishings in sumptuous, bold red and gold fabrics. Hotel facilities include 10 restaurants and bars (including the award-winning Mandarin Grill), a pool, two ballrooms, 12 function rooms, a spa, two squash courts, a gym and two tennis courts.

2. Berjaya Times Square Hotel - Berjaya Times Square Shopping Centre

An all-in-one complex that dominates the city centre's mallscape, the 48-storey twin-tower Berjaya Times Square stands out. Linked to Imbi Monorail station via a footbridge, it has more than 65 food venues and 1,000 stores stocking local indie labels and a few high-end brands. But it is the mall's portfolio of entertainment offerings that really capture our attention: Berjaya Times Square houses a 133,000sqft indoor theme park, a 48-lane bowling alley and a nine-screen movie theatre.

Topping the mall is the five-star Berjaya Times Square Hotel, a lively property with 650 rooms that boast Georgian-style interiors (think sash windows, decorative mouldings and wooden screen doors) and hotel facilities include a gym, two squash courts, two spas, and a gorgeously landscaped free-form pool with water fountain.

3. Cititel Mid Valley - Mid Valley Megamall

Located about 15 minutes from the KL city centre, the 4.5 million sqft Mid Valley City is a complex comprising a mall, an office tower block and two hotels – the 646-rooom Cititel Midvalley and the 390-room Boulevard Hotel. The mall has more than 430 stores spread across its five floors: plus linked to Mid Valley Megamall via a bridge and underground corridor is Gardens Mall, a more lavish environ with high-end international designer brands.

For an affordable hotel packed with charm, we suggest Cititel Mid Valley, a three-star property tucked on a calm, green square directly linked to Mid Valley Megamall. A low-key, traditional hotel, its 646 perkily-styled rooms have something of a soft, homey feel and in-room amenities include complimentary broadband access, a ceiling fan and an attached bath with shower facilities.

4. One World Hotel - 1 Utama

Spread across five million sqft, 1 Utama is the world's fourth-largest mall and carries a mix of 650 high end brands and regional indie labels. It is most unique for its array of entertainment offerings which include two movie theatres, a 36-lane bowling alley, an indoor rock climbing setup, gym, baseball batting cages, futsal court, game arcade, karaoke centre and scuba diving centre. Also unique to 1U is the 30,000sqft Secret Garden – the largest rooftop garden in Southeast Asia (with over 500 species of exotic flora).

Offering direct access to 1U is One World Hotel, a five-star hotel with 438 Wi-Fi equipped rooms decorated in a warm colour palette of gold, beige and brown and stuffed with the latest mod cons. Once you’ve perused through 1U's retail and entertainment offerings, we suggest you grab a drink poolside, book a treatment at sanctuary@1 spa or play a game of tennis at one of the hotel’s four courts.

5. Sunway Resort & Spa - Sunway Pyramid

What we really love about Sunway Resort & Spa is the host of activities available to keep you occupied. On one side is the city's most popular outdoor water theme park, Sunway Lagoon, while flanking the hotel's other side is the 1.7 million sqft Sunway Pyramid. The mall is home to Malaysia's only in-mall ice skating rink, over 800 retail venues, an archery range, bowling alley, 12-screen movie theatre and a Moroccan-inspired indoor 'bazaar'.

With its Egyptian-inspired facade - a giant sphinx at the entrance, a pyramid-shaped main complex, pseudo-hieroglyphics and faux-Pharaoh statues - it sure is elaborate. Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa follows the same design element and offers five-star splendour in its 441 rooms - we especially love its spacious Arabian Nights themed suite.
