7 KL Cake Shops In 7 Days

Kuala Lumpur’s sugar hit list

We know dessert is an important end to any meal and we are glad that so many restaurants in Kuala Lumpur have menus with sizable dessert sections to help indulge our sweet tooth. But where do you go when you aren’t looking for a meal – just a sugary snack?

Offering you a solution to your sugar craving, we have decided to list the best cafes and bakeries in the city. Making KL a sweeter place, they pump out classics but you will also find some places that have infused local flavour into traditional western desserts. For teatime treats, head to these seven cool KL cake shops – a new place for you to indulge in sweet sins each day of the week.

Acme @ The Troika, KL

The concept is apparent when you step into Acme Bar & Coffee – with clean steel lines, comfy sofas, plush cushions and floor-to-ceiling glass walls letting natural light in, it looks like a hip New York City loft. Winner of the Best New Restaurant in the Time Out KL Food Awards 2012, soft jazz music plays unobtrusively in the background creating an intimate, laidback atmosphere.

Desserts score high on our list with a one-of-a-kind jackfruit cake being the star. Moist, flavoursome yet not too overpowering it is a bestseller and goes like hotcakes! If you still have room after the cake, snuggle up with their light-as-air Pavlova – it lives up to its name, with just enough tanginess from the fresh berries to balance out the sugary meringue. Delectable by Su @ Pavilion KL

Though Delectable by Su is a boutique bakery offering a vast array of cookies, cakes, brownies and truffles, it is really the cupcakes that take the forefront at this delightful little Pavilion KL outfit. Not keen on sinking your teeth into the moist, buttery and fluffy cupcakes (three for RM28)? Then the double decker cheese cake is where it’s at: with its milky-tasting, crispy shortbread base and velvety cottage cheese filling, this baby will see you visiting this bakery over and over again.

Keeping with the store’s high end feel, the interior design makes the place look like an all-white Parisian art studio, with decorative cornice mouldings, a dramatic centrepiece Egyptian crystal chandelier and rows of white oak cabinets lining the walls holding the beautifully designed cupcakes.

Opening Hours: 10:00 – 22:00
Location: Pavilion KL
Address: P6.03.00 Level 6, Pavillion KL, Jalan Bukit Bintang, 55100

Wondermilk @ Damansara Uptown

Wondermilk is a whimsical, artsy little cafe in Damansara Uptown, Petaling Jaya popular for its hip, indie vibe. Offering its own brand of flavoured milk (hence the name), the cafe was founded by a group of art enthusiasts so the space often acts as a platform for them to show off their creative flair. As a result, the place is thoroughly quirky with potted plants, mismatched furniture, scribbled blackboards and ceramic art animals making up a large part of the decor.

Dubbing themselves the ‘emporium of super cupcakes, yummy food, great coffee, awesome goodies and not-so-serious art’, Wondermilk is most popular for its cute cupcakes, dubbed ‘Cuppacakes’. Baked fresh daily and priced RM4.50 a pop, they feature catchy names such as John Lemon and Foxy Red Velvet, and stand out for their rich, intense flavours (maybe even better than homemade ones). Harrods Cafe @ Suria KLCC

If you have a yen to indulge in high tea then head to Harrod’s Cafe – located on the first floor of Suria KLCC (beside Isetan). It is hard to be indifferent to this charming, street-level English-style bistro. A London institution featuring Harrods’ signature interior design style, the imposing grandeur of this cafe is not the only reason we are impressed – rather, it is the display cabinets stocking rows upon rows of pastel-coloured cakes, macaroons and piping hot pastries. Everything on the menu is tempting but desserts (ranging in price from RM8-RM25) are their strong suit: we suggest the smooth and rich strawberry cheesecake as it is the perfect way to treat your taste buds. Whisk Espresso Bar + Bake Shop @ 1 Utama

A coffee house that started out as a family business, Whisk has been in business since 2010, and the homemade recipes make each slice of cake here heaven sent. The place has gained quite a reputation over the years – in fact, you are not considered a sweet-toothed KL-ite unless you have been to Whisk and sampled their array of delectable desserts. From melt-in-your-mouth cheesecakes to flaky thin vanilla slices (sheets of buttery puff pastry sandwiching a sizable dollop of vanilla infused egg custard with cornflour), they have it all.

The coffee house itself looks a lot like a simple, old school Chinese kopitiam (coffee shop) with bare brick walls splashed with vanilla-coloured paint, doodles of men with handlebar moustaches, exposed piping, marble chequered floors and extra large naked bulbs providing dim lighting.

Opening Hours: 10:00 – 22:00
Address: G139, 1 Utama Shopping Centre, 1, Lebuh Bandar Utama, Bandar Utama, PJ

The Bee @ Publika

The Bee looks a lot like Central Perk, the café from Friends fame. Featuring a great neighbourhood java joint vibe, the cafeteria-style restaurant looks like the type of hidden, hip bistro frequented only by those in the know. The bar dominates the space with a large chalkboard hanging above it, sometimes featuring daily specials, other times with inspirational quotes. Meanwhile, the rest of the decor is very retro-inspired with uncovered pipe work, polished concrete floors, mismatched black, red, light- and dark-brown wooden tables and chairs, and cosy couches.

The dessert selections are varied and include top notch picks, like a peanut butter and chocolate cake that will have you dreaming about it days afterward. Also fantastic are the macaroons – you simply have to try the wasabi and cempedak (jackfruit variation) flavoured ones as they will leave you weak at the knees. Read More...

Pastis Cafe & Dining @ Gardens Mall

In our opinion, it is almost a crime to visit the Gardens Mall and not indulge your sweet tooth in Pastis Cafe & Dining. Hands down, this place serves the best coffee and brownies in town – the only downside is that it can get particularly packed but its crowd-pleasing treats are worth the wait for a table (or you could just order to go).

A corner lot patisserie with a large selection of cookies, cakes and other tempting treats, there’s a lot to die for here and the tiered cakes and layered desserts really steal our hearts. The superstar here is the dense and moist strawberry shortcake. Comprising layers of buttery sponge cake paired well with velvety cream and strawberry puree, it is on the not-so-sweet end of the sugar spectrum.

Opening Hours: 10:00 – 22:00
Address: Ground floor, The Gardens Mall
