In Kuala Lumpur the name Bernard Chandran is synonymous with local haute couture. However, few people know that the man behind the stunning gowns worn by Hollywood celebrities such as Estelle and Lady Gaga has also launched a multi-label menswear showcase store called Area 27, at the basement level of Fahrenheit 88 mall. At Area 27 expect to find cool print tees, limited edition sneakers and other designer apparel for urban gents looking for something a little bit unique.

The ultra sleek interior design of the boutique is not an accident as the founder wanted Area 27 customers to feel as if they were exploring an edgy, New York shopping warehouse. On one hand the place feels very industrial chic with bare concrete floors, simple white walls and strings of naked light bulbs: on the other hand however, naked, headless glossy mannequins hanging from the ceiling, a graffiti covered cashier counter and central glass showcase cabinet with bejewelled sneakers gives it an expressive edgy vibe. Tame, it most certainly isn’t.
For all its urban flair, Area 27’s retail collections are not too serious – instead they are genuinely and enjoyably eclectic, with fashions (mostly street wear) from off track, hard-to-find international labels you cannot normally find in KL. Brands like Ana Sekularac, Butterflysoulfire and Rudolf Dassler are well represented, but it is the floor-to-ceiling glass display cabinets that house Area 27’s primary draw – footwear from well-known international labels. On our last visit we saw limited edition Alexander McQueen Puma Blackstations, plus the result of collaboration with Puma has produced bespoke Area 27 trainers.
This is a boutique that should be your first port of call for stylish one-stop shopping in KL, as well as hard to find international clothing labels, the store also has its own line of quirky T-shirts, plus it retails plastic toys handpicked by Bernard Chandran himself. Combining the animated energy of KL’s shopping scene with rarefied labels, service is efficient with young and bouncy retail assistants.
