So far, the rooftop Cedar on 15 restaurant hasn’t caused many waves on Kuala Lumpur’s foodie scene and it is a mystery as to why it hasn’t. Its attractions are plentiful: it has a fantastic location on the 15th floor of Impiana KLCC Hotel (just opposite Suria KLCC), food is sumptuous and not overpriced, the ambiance refined and relaxed, and the interior design posh, with attention to detail evident.
The kitchen is headed by Austrian WACS National Global Master Chef, Helmut Lamberger, a man who deserves his recently-acquired title. His food is just so amazingly tasty and his humble, down-to-earth nature makes our meal a fun, easygoing one. The restaurant’s interior design of dark lacquered tables and red, black and cream upholstered chairs makes the place look incredibly lavish. Arrive early to get a table on the balcony – it is the perfect spot for photos of the city skyline.

We kick off our meal at Cedar on 15 with creamy asparagus soup (RM16). A great option for vegetarians, it is the clear winner of the night. Velvety-smooth, it tastes rich but not too overpowering, and, paired with a simple breadstick, we savour every last drop. Though it is only the first dish of the night we are already convinced of Chef Helmut’s superior cooking skills.
We also sample s carpaccio of Australian beef with herbal cream cheese and lettuce (RM24) – the tender beef ribbons match up superbly with the toppings of juicy pan-fried mushrooms, pungent Buratta cheese, tangy cream cheese and rocket leaves.
Tucking into the main courses at Cedar on 15, we are struck by how Chef Helmut has catered to all comers with every type of meat available on the menu, plus there is even a vegetarian dish for non-meat lovers. We first sample grilled fillet of salmon stuffed with leek and potatoes and brunoise dill sauce (RM42) – the salmon practically melts in our mouths, the meat given a tangy kick at intervals by the crisp leek and dill sauce.
Next up is slow roasted lamb shoulder (RM46), seasoned with tarragon juice, we love the fact that the meat’s taste is not overwhelmed by the marinade, while the baked baby potato topped with cheese on the side is easily scooped up.
That is not the end to our main courses – we are also treated to two of Cedar on 15’s signature dishes: pumpkin-seed-crusted black cod on a bed of mushroom tomato chutney and fennel mousse, and venison baked in sour cream dough with caramelised beetroot. The codfish is simply so deliciously memorable – each bite into the fluffy layers of fresh fish is given a crunchy kick by the slightly salty golden yellow pumpkin seeds. Meanwhile, the venison is absolutely unique – it is not the tender meat that wows us, rather the sour cream dough crust: crispy on the outside and smooth on the inside, it is a real surprise. Mushrooms line the inner recesses of the ‘shell’ and paired with the sour cream taste, we are treated to a juicy, rich yet tangy flavour-filled explosion with each bite.
Even if you are completely full by now, a trip to Cedar on 15 would not be complete without dessert. Sample the seasonal fruit platter (RM18) with mango sorbet on the side for a sharp, palate-cleansing treat: We are particularly taken with the matchless chocolate seduction.
This dessert deserves mention: it is basically a trio of dark mousse quenelles and white silky ganache, crowning sachertorte (a Viennese chocolate cake with apricot jam). The crumbly texture of the cake couples delightfully with the silky smooth, rich but not-too-sweet cocoa taste, making this a dessert we will be coming back to the restaurant again and again for. Drinks-wise, our personal favourite is the green energy mocktail, a stimulating mix of soda water, Red Bull and lime juice.
A sleek and pared-back space hosting a kitchen that comes up with astoundingly creative food, we highly recommend you visit Cedar on 15 for their set meals which start at RM55 for a two-course and RM58 for a three-course meal. The soundtrack varies depending the time you visit: from 18:00 – 20:00 they play jazz tunes but from 23:00 – 02:00 there is a live band or DJ.
