Cilantro Restaurant and Wine Bar in Micasa All Suites
Fine dining French-Japanese restaurant in KLCC, Kuala Lumpur0
Cilantro Restaurant & Wine Bar is a French-Japanese fine dining eatery offering award-winning small-plate cuisine accompanied by sparkling service. It may not be an everyday pleasure, but it certainly has gained a loyal following among Kuala Lumpur’s gourmet enthusiasts.
Its sumptuous French-Japanese inspired food certainly helps it top the list of Kuala Lumpur’s most rarefied and progressive eateries, but non-intrusive, well mannered service, polished interior design and a laidback ambiance also contribute to its popularity. Located inside Micasa All Suites hotel along Jalan Tun Razak, a fitting introduction to the kitchen’s cuisine is through the chef's degustation menu (RM340 per person), a series of dishes created for a minimum of two people, based on seasonal produce available.

Cilantro Restaurant & Wine Bar’s kitchen is helmed by Japanese-born Chef Takashi Kimura who puts out complex, refined Franco-Japanese dishes that deserve their fame, with the epic mains acting as the true heart of the restaurant. What makes them stand out are the unique Asian touches infused into select dishes on the seasonal, ever-evolving menu. This intermingling of flavours and textures is a format that has us applauding Kimura’s sensational skills.
On our last visit we start off our meal with angel hair pasta with sea urchin (RM98): sitting on a bed of creamy sauce, the al dente pasta is complemented beautifully by fresh roe and sweet prawns. Next up is another one of the kitchen’s signature dishes, unagi and foie gras tourte with mesclun (RM88). The crumbed batter is buttery, perfectly balancing the eel and foie gras.
Our main course arrives next: the first is grilled blackmore Wagyu (RM158), which is the only letdown for the night because it was surprisingly bland, and the meat a little gamey. However, the roasted veal with ratte potato (RM248) saved the meal - beautifully fragrant it is full-bodied in flavour with tender, juicy meat. Kimura’s reverence for French technique comes through here, resulting in a dish worth writing home about and we polished off every last piece - a testament to its spectacular taste.
After heartily indulging in the main courses (plus we also have birthday cake courtesy of one of our dining companions) at Cilantro Restaurant & Wine Bar, we decide to split two desserts amongst us. Kimura’s desserts are as nuanced as everything else and we recommend you conclude the meal with the earthy, chestnut creme brûlée (RM38) and bitter chocolate mousse with caramel ice cream (RM38).
