Emporium Grand Cafe and Lounge in KL

Lavish restaurant and bar beside Fraser Place

About one km from Suria KLCC, along a labyrinth of streets beside Fraser Place, is the over-the-top Emporium Grand Cafe and Lounge. A surprising find in central Kuala Lumpur, this lavish restaurant and bar resembles a secret gentleman’s club. Head through its small set of wooden doors and you are greeted with a scene full of Victorian splendour – think elaborate chandeliers, ornate gold frieze work, velvet wallpaper, Persian rugs and plush furniture that set a thoroughly opulent scene.

An almost clandestine location that looks like it was made for debonair drinking, what makes Emporium Grand Cafe and Lounge so special is the fact that it runs the longest happy hours in the city, from 06:00 – 21:00 (a record 15 hours).

A hidden gem along Jalan Perak, Emporium Grand Cafe and Lounge is fast becoming one of our favourite chill-out venues, not only for its deliciously grand interior design, semi-secret location but also its fantastic food. The menu reads pretty simply: they serve western and Mediterranean food with an Asian twist - some examples of their reinterpretations of classic dishes include a spaghetti carbonara topped with shrimp and a mango-based tiramisu (instead of chocolate).

We love the fact that such originality does not come at a heavy price tag though – lunch sets start at RM25 (weekdays 12:00 – 15:00) and there are regular dinner promotions; and even a breakfast menu. We also love the fact that service is thoroughly professional and very efficient.

Though the place is rather large, it feels very intimate with cosy nooks and corners with different types of seating arrangements: some areas have oversized tan leather booths while others offer dark wood tables with velvet-upholstered bucket chairs. Moroccan-style ceiling lamps, gold-gilded wall lamps, neon pink and blue lighting and decorative wallpaper give the place a burlesque feel.

Drinks-wise, we are fans of the old-school cocktails available at Emporium Grand Cafe and Lounge, which come in an assortment of flavours, from minty mojitos to spectacular sidecars but there is also a lengthy beer, wine and spirit list. We recommend you try the peach margarita – a potent blend of tequila and peach schnapps, given a tangy kick with a dash of lime juice. If you arrive in the early evening jazz is the musical soundtrack, but once the sun sets expect it to switch to top radio hits and some indie rock.
