Fat Boy’s Burger Bar is quickly gaining notoriety in KL for its strange, inventive burger combos, as well as for the fact that this Singaporean chain’s burgers often sport even stranger names. Located at Publika mall in Sri Hartamas, it is a quirky restaurant that blends in well with the mall’s surrounds.
All talk of funny burger names aside, the food served here is pretty fantastic. One of the favourites is the Bleu Peppercorn, a beef patty encrusted in black pepper, topped with crispy onion rings and homemade blue cheese dressing, all sandwiched between a sesame seed bun.

The first item on the menu is the Fat Basterd. It is prepared with a double heaping of beef patties, chubby strips of bacon, slices of cheddar cheese and fried egg, topped with Fat Boy’s signature homemade barbecue sauce.
The Swiss Shroom started out as a pretty standard mushroom topped burger but the Emmenthal cheese with garlic aioli gave it a creamy, zesty tang that make this burger a clear winner. If the size of the burgers at Fat Boy’s Burger Bar make you break out in a sweat, try the Wimpy: it is basically half of a Fat Basterd, and so much easier to finish on your own.
There are plenty of imaginative variations of the classic burger here, including a bacon-stuffed pork patty topped with grilled bananas and peanut butter on a honey oat bun. It’s named The Elvis, although it’s not sure the King of Rock & Roll would have approved.
One thing to note, burgers here are prepared medium well done unless you state another preference.
If you want to divert from the standard menu options (and there are many choices here), you can opt to create your own burger. All it takes is four simple steps to build your own: first off, you have a choice of white sesame, whole wheat or honey oat bun.
Next is your choice of chicken, beef or pork patty, and then come a wide variety of add-ons: the selections range from bacon to guacamole, sautéed shitake mushrooms and grilled bananas. Lastly you have a choice of sauces, and once again the choices are simply staggering and included wasabi mayonnaise, curry remoulade and even peanut butter.
The interior of the restaurant reminds one of a cafeteria (an exclusive, artsy cafeteria where only cool kids are allowed to sit) with glossy white tables and black plastic chairs. The walls and glass windows feature black-and-white silhouettes of Pac-man like monsters waving pitchforks, robots, curving arrows, butterflies and birds. All in all it is a pretty surreal-looking piece of artwork, blending in perfectly with Publika’s edgy artistic vibe.
Those who are not keen on burgers can opt to sample one of the dishes from Fat Boy’s Burger Bar’s Best of the Rest section of the menu. There is a Caesar salad option to keep vegetarians happy but by far the best thing on this side of the carte du jour is the country fried steak, a thick and juicy slab of crispy, herb marinated meat drizzled with cheesy béchamel sauce and served with a heaping of mashed potatoes and coleslaw.
Fat Boy’s Burger Bar is located in Publika, a trendy shopping mall in the Hartamas area that draws in the well-to-do residents of Damansara and Mont Kiara. The mall has a mixture of international fashion brands and edgy independent boutiques, inimitable restaurants and cafés and plenty of art sculptures spread out throughout the mall.
The easiest way to get to Publika is by driving there: located along Jalan Duta, if you are coming from Mont Kiara and Martrade, use Jalan Hartamas 1, Jalan Duta Kiara and Persiaran Dutamas.
