Built above the award-winning Garibaldi, a fine-dining Italian restaurant in Bangsar Village, Garibar is the perfect place to head to if you are in the mood for a minty Mojito, a cold glass of Heineken or an iced tea that packs quite a punch. Best known for its ability to pull in the after-work crowd, bartenders are just waiting to shake and stir making this nightclub a rather excellent addition to the area’s drinking scene.
Unsurprisingly popular among expats and young professionals, you will find the bar taken up by a steady stream of regulars if you arrive past 20:00.
The dozens of bottles housed in dark wooden cabinets, beside the floor-to-ceiling windows (which offer fantastic views of Bangsar’s streets) do most of the interior design legwork. Tightly packed high tables and chairs, lazily rotating ceiling fans and dim lighting contribute to its intimate atmosphere and attentive service from staff members makes the place feel like a friendly, neighbourhood bar. If you are after lively conversation and a casual vibe, then Garibar is the place for you as on most nights the music is not too loud and geared towards relaxation – think jazz, blues and easy listening.
However, on Friday and Saturday Garibar sheds this laidback feel and turns into a happening nightclub, complete with a spacious dance floor and resident DJs spinning lots of R&B and techno tunes.
There is a good list of wines and beers available, as well as by-the-bottle choices of spirits but it is the creative cocktails that are the star attractions here. We are keen on the classics like the mojitos, although it is the Boston beach iced tea that is a real treat for our taste buds – it is a sweet, sour and refreshing mix of vodka, gin, rum, tequila, grand marnier, triple sec and coca-cola that is simply memorable.
Food-wise Garibar shares the same kitchen as Garibaldi and the food offerings are a little simpler (but still flavoursome) to that found in the restaurant. We recommend you share the sizable black ink squid pasta as it is a wonderful dish, especially paired with a side of the crispy, buttery calamari.
