Swedish brand H&M has quickly earned itself a spot in the hearts and minds of fashion-conscious KL-ites with its first store in Kuala Lumpur. A label that needs little introduction, H&M is uber popular the world over for its practice of putting out clothing lines based on the season’s hottest runway fashion trends. When we visited the KL store of this high street franchise it was showcasing its Autumn/Winter collection – we especially loved the men’s sharp, 60s-inspired suits.
The interior design of the three-storey KL store follows that of its sister boutiques in other countries, with stark white walls, lots of chrome, glass and mirror accents, high ceilings and warm, flattering lighting from naked bulbs featured prominently.

Just past the front doors on the ground floor are a variety of new arrivals perfect for party girls. Here you’ll find in-vogue fashion finds such as peplum tops, leggings and bejewelled skirts (a subtle nod to the new electro pop fad), and towards the back are accessories such as necklaces, shoes, clutch bags and bracelets. The second floor is dedicated to quieter, more basic offerings such as office wear, and street wear-oriented stuff (think graphic T-shirts and faux leather pants) while the third floor is divided into men’s and kids lines.
Taking over the space once occupied by UK retail giant Debenhams in Lot 10, there are a few things that make the KL branch of this multinational clothing company stand out in the city’s retail landscape.

Firstly, elegance is the byword here at H&M and it is a breath of fresh air for its trendy, up-to-the-minute fashions at reasonable prices (T-shirt prices start at just RM19.90). Sure, there are other boutiques in KL’s malls that have trendy designs but to find copies of the season’s hottest fashions at cheap prices is often hard.
Secondly, even if you find them at local boutiques, the quality of these designs is oftentimes questionable – such is not the case with stuff found at H&M. We especially like their capsule collections, where you can find one-of-a-kind items. Lastly, their 30-days return policy is a standout feature – other KL boutiques typically only offer a seven-day exchange period.
