Hard Rock Café KL
Cheeseburgers, French fries and good old-fashioned American rock vibe…
Hard Rock Café KL is a legend on KL’s nightlife scene that opened its doors more than 21 years ago. Sitting along Jalan Sultan Ismail (right beside Concorde Hotel), it is a great place to go if you have a hankering for a burger and fries, or if you just need a good dose of classic American rock vibe.
The atmosphere is vibrant, with Top 40 hits. There is a stage for live performances, usually reserved for local bands, but there are some international acts that play once in a while. Previous superstar performers who have played at Hard Rock Café KL include the Grammy award-winning hip hop band, Arrested Development and 80s English pop duo, Go West.
The interior of Hard Rock Café KL is, for the most part, decorated with Rock memorabilia. The décor is very hip and there is the usual trademark Hard Rock style evident throughout, with glass cabinets proudly displaying rock ‘n’ roll trivia and wait staff walking around with T-shirts full of pin badges.
Hard Rock Café KL has a vintage Harley Davidson displayed on a ledge above the bar’s front entrance: inside, the place resembles a typical American diner with wooden tables and chairs that can easily be pushed together to cater to large groups. But it is the bar that lends Hard Rock Café KL its diner-like vibe, with Tuscan-red wall splashes and high-back dark wooden chairs.
Keeping with Hard Rock’s good old-fashioned rock theme, covering the walls at Hard Rock Café KL are signed and framed music memorabilia, like framed vinyl records. Plus, there is a raw silk jacket worn by Jimi Hendrix and an autographed jumpsuit that Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer Chad Smith wore during the band’s Stadium Arcadium tour. Then there is a bass guitar from Weezer’s Scott Shriner, a top worn by No Doubt pop superstar Gwen Stefani and a pair of leather pants by Motley Crue’s Mick Mars.
The most prized pieces of rock treasures on view are the animation cells used in the production of the Beatles’ motion picture Yellow Submarine and The Who’s Pete Townsend’s cufflinks.
A well-known, welcoming bar that gets a lot of people talking about its eclectic, chic ‘junkshop’ look, the good food at Hard Rock Café is another reason the place gets plenty of repeat customers. Portions are generous so you really get what you pay for.
The usual Americana specialties like cheeseburgers, French fries, nachos, barbecued chicken and onion rings are available but if you want to sample a little bit of everything, then the jumbo combo comes highly recommended. It is a medley platter of the kitchen’s greatest hits, including spring rolls, hickory-smoked chicken wings, potato skins, onion rings and tupelo chicken.
Cap off your meal with a hot fudge brownie sundae – a moist brownie the size of your palm topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, warm chocolate sauce, sprinkles and cherries. Alternatively, you could just tuck into a banana split with a side of strawberry milkshake – it’s really up to you.
There is a Hard Rock store on the ground floor where you can snag your Hard Rock collectibles like T-shirts, teddy bears, souvenir shot glasses and a collection of quirky and colourful pins (there is a pretty cool one designed in the shape of Menara KL (KL Tower) with the Hard Rock logo wrapped around it).
Hard Rock Café KL’s clientele is a mix of sophisticates, the indie-inclined, expats and backpackers. Service is friendly and your requests will be responded to in a timely fashion. The place gets pretty crowded (hey, it is a Hard Rock Café after all), so be prepared to wait for a table. Lit up brilliantly by night, both the restaurant and gift shop open late.
