Located along the main block of Changkat Bukit Bintang, Havana Bar & Grill is a restaurant and nightclub that celebrates the Latin American spirit. One of Kuala Lumpur’s numero uno nightclubs, it is set in an elegant 1950s mansion and divided into three bright and colourful areas – the main outdoor bar, back patio and upstairs lounge.
A favourite amongst the city’s growing expat community, all who enter Havana are in for a wild time – even if you are not the type to get down to the beats of the club’s salsa music, we are sure you will be foot-tapping the night away. The crew of DJs plays samba and bachata tunes, and they even throw in some disco hits: a live salsa band and dance shows on certain nights keep partiers moving till late.
Havana looks like a colourful Cuban-style hacienda in a tropical rainforest, with its highlight being a sprawling terrace upstairs with a bar that offers great views of the Changkat Bukit Bintang nightlife. Beside the balcony is a nightclub-like space with a large dance floor where you can watch the rest of the club’s partygoers shake up the dance floor.
The al fresco dining area downstairs has lemon-yellow backsplash tables and a bar with a blackboard of signature drinks and prices chalked on it. But what really catches your attention is the large cartoon mural of busty Latin beauties at the end of the room. All in all, the vibe here is relaxed and intimate – the perfect spot for a midweek respite. Inside, the decor is provocative and friendly with lots of blood red divans, Mexican-paver tile floors and oversized black-and-white photos. Beside the indoor bar (which runs parallel to the one outside) are red-felt snooker tables and a glass display case of wine bottles.
We love the island-inspired drinks but it is the minty mojito that is the standout beverage, especially since the bar has such a wide range of rums available: made with fresh mint, syrup and a generous amount of rum, it is a very refreshing, tangy-tasting beverage.
Food served is a mix of Cajun classics and Louisiana Creole specialities: worth mentioning is Havana Bar & Grill’s famous jambalaya and gumbo as well as the crawfish boulettes, but you could also tuck into their juicy, premium steaks (grilled-to-perfection). If you would prefer bar-style snacks to go with your beer, try the Cajun chicken wings or the beef back ribs –they’ll have you licking your fingers.
