A great place for all-day happy hour promotions (a glass of draught is only RM10.50), Healy Mac’s Irish Bar & Restaurant is an Irish-themed restaurant and bar along Jalan P Ramlee, Kuala Lumpur. Irish owned, stocking a variety of ales and serving good western food, this sports bar looks like a typical Dublin tavern.
The interior is all rural charm with lots of wooden panels and pillars, bare red brick walls and wrought iron ceiling lamps and fans giving it a sort of Gothic charm. Nine wall mounted flat-screen TVs, a big screen projector, a stage for live music with lots of football and Guinness memorabilia complete its interior design. Set in a large, corner shop lot, this honest, uncomplicated Irish restobar has a warm and inviting neighbourhood bar feel.
One of the oldest restobars in the city, Healy Mac’s Irish Bar & Restaurant is actually an import. The first incarnation of the family-owned bar (called O’ Brien’s Bar) is in Churchtown, County Cork, Ireland, and gained recognition for regularly hosting British celebrities.
Then in 2009, owner Liam Healy and his partner Guna Shan decided to open up a branch (under a different name) in KL along Changkat Bukit Bintang: today, they have five outlets around the country. If you are staying in the centre of the city, then head to the branch along Jalan P Ramlee. There are flashy clubs like Modestos and Seduction along this stretch but Healy Mac’s Irish Bar & Restaurant has a different sort of energy, with hospitable staff members and an old local feel, making it a great place to grab a drink and enjoy good food, especially in the early evening.
The added-value attractions at Healy Mac’s Irish Bar & Restaurant are its screenings of live sports matches, like the premiership-six nations’ rugby. Drawing in a devoted circle of regulars, jazz in the early evening contributes to its laidback feel. However after 22:00 the music tends to segue into dance hits, seemingly in an effort to overpower the heavy bass beats from nearby nightclubs.
There’s a pretty extensive drinks menu: beer selections include the usual suspects – Guinness, Heineken, Carlsberg, Tiger, Paulaner and Corona – plus Healey Mac’s has a good variety of whiskeys, spirits and cocktails. Every Wednesday is Ladies Night, which means members of the fairer sex get two free cocktails with every drink purchase.
Offering good, simple non-halal food, the 1.3kg pork knuckles (RM65) is probably the kitchen’s most successful dish. Served with roast potatoes and sauerkraut, the delicately balanced flavours and tender meat makes this a favourite with regulars. Also good is the hearty Australian beef burger, made with 100% lean minced beef, topped with sharp cheddar cheese, thick black pepper sauce and served with a side of cold coleslaw and thick-cut French fries.
The snacks menu also comes up trumps, with popular bites such as calamari, spring rolls, fried sausages and chicken wings available. However, we recommend you try the mutton vindaloo (a type of dry Indian curry) with bread crackers to go with your Guinness – the dish is a little spicy but the combination of salty, peppery meat washed down with cold beer is heavenly.
