Set on top of a low-rise Jalan Mayang office building, the two-storey Il Lido Kuala Lumpur is an award-winning fine-dining restaurant and rooftop bar combo in the heart of KL. Offering peerless Italian cuisine it is a great place for a casual, romantic date, with the kitchen offering great-tasting and very reasonably priced food when compared to other fine-dining places in the city.  

Its crowning glory is the views from its rooftop bar. Sure, they’re not the sky-high views found at Sky Bar or Luna Bar but Il Lido is near to the ground and offers some pretty unique photo opportunities of the PETRONAS Twin Towers, KL Tower and the city skyline.

The rooftop bar is the real reason we visited Il Lido Kuala Lumpur. Hip and modern, the layout is in keeping with trendy vibe. Shaded by white awning, the bar is located in the centre with seating areas flanking it. On one side is green turf with lots of foliage, benches bolted to the walls, squat wooden tables and transparent, molar-shaped red, green, orange and yellow stools – it is pretty quirky. A study in contrasts, the other side of the bar is the embodiment of sophisticated with concrete floors, lots of wood panelling, and the same molar-shaped stools, only this time they are in shades of shiny silver and gold. Portable air conditioning keeps the whole place very cool.

Drinks-wise the bartending team are pretty inventive – just sample the Venetian-inspired cocktails (like the light, sweet and delicate Rossini – a blend of strawberry puree and Prosecco) and you are sure to visit this rooftop bar again and again. The wine list is pretty impressive with Italian wines especially well represented; a glass of merlot is about RM26.

The setting in the downstairs restaurant is as you would imagine: a substantial space in shades of cream and brown, with black bucket chairs, white tablecloth covered tables and silver accents. The kitchen at Il Lido Kuala Lumpur is headed by Andrea Zanella and what we absolutely love is that he adds a touch of panache to the food, with every dish presented with elaborate flair.

Let’s just run through the standouts – first of all, there is foie gras con lenticchie e prosciutto d’anitra (roasted goose liver with crispy, salty duck bacon and lentils) and fritto di calamari con insalata di patate (crispy, buttery deep fried calamari with creamy potato salad). For mains, try ravioli di granchio in nero con fave e bottarga (velvety ravioli with juicy strips of crabmeat, fava and cured roe) and guance di bue wagyu (tender, juicy wagyu beef cheeks with caramelised root vegetables).

You would expect all the bells and whistles to cost you an arm and a leg but Il Lido KL proves you wrong by keeping prices so affordable, it practically guarantees that you will be back for more. We recommend the lunch sets – for RM49.90 you get an amuse bouche, choice of daily appetizer or soup, main, dessert and coffee.

The only gripe we have is that service is a little slow especially if you are here on a busy weekend night, but the fantastic food, drinks and great ambiance more than make up for it.
