  • IPPUDO Restaurant at Bangsar Shopping Centre

Renowned Japanese Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur

Ippudo is a renowned Japanese restaurant that specialises in tantalising ramen dishes – their third outlet to open in Kuala Lumpur. The concept embraces a contemporary look and feel, which generally caters towards a more upscale clientele. Unlike its two predecessors, Ippudo in Bangsar Shopping Centre is spacious with an open bar section as well as a more extensive food and beverage menu to complement its main ramen noodle soups.

Signature dishes include Shiromaru Motoaji, which is a classic Hakata-style ramen in original tonkotsu broth served with ultra-thin noodles, pork loin, bean sprouts, kikurage and spring onions. The popular Akamaru Shinaji is served with Ippudo’s original tonkotsu broth which is further enhanced with special blended miso paste and fragrant garlic oil, while the Karaka-men comes with special spicy miso, cashew nuts and ground pork.

  • During the breezy evenings, guests can unwind by a fully-operational bar serving cocktails, whisky, sake and wine, while enjoying a wide array of appetisers and light snacks - most of which are only available at this outlet. As a thirst quencher, we opted for a deliciously healthy pomegranate smoothie which was smooth, creamy, and best of all, not overtly sugary!

We kicked off with an appetiser dish consisting of three kushiyaki skewers: premium beef cubes with cherry tomatoes and okra, salmon cubes with salmon roe, and soft boiled egg wrapped in pork bacon strips. The juicy and tender beef cubes were grilled to perfection, and as unapologetic salmon lovers, we were most impressed by the salmon cube skewers; each slice was thick and topped with a generous amount of salmon roe, offering a distinctively fresh taste.

Next, the seared salmon rolls with mentaiko came in the form of six bite-sized rolls placed delicately across a white plate. The melt-in-the-mouth salmon was as fresh as the previous skewers (presumably form the same cut) and the mentaiko sauce really provided an added tangy dose of flavour with every bite. Our final appetizer, braised pork ribs with caramel and marmalade sauce, is a real must for the meat-lovers. If you enjoy a spicier variation, we recommend ordering it with extra chilli. Neatly stacked with caramel sauce drizzled on top, the dish’s presentation is as impressive as its taste – as well as the rather generous portion size.

Only available at the Bangsar Shopping Centre outlet, our final dish, Ippuddo Kuro ramen, came served in a Tonkotsu broth with slices of pork, finely chopped spring onions, spicy blended miso paste, fragrant garlic, and a handful of chewy black fungus. While Ippudo’s three signature ramen dishes are subtle in flavour and texture, the Kuro ramen noodles are noticeably thicker while the fragrant garlic mixed in the broth results in an intense flavour with a spicy kick. The hefty portion and high quality ingredients makes for an exceptional gastronomic experience that is also good value for money.

To end this review on another good (and sweet) note, let’s talk about the desserts. Our choice of caramel pudding resembled a homemade pancetta with strawberries and chocolate drizzle – a delightful way to end a great meal.

Perfect for dining with the family or a casual meeting with acquaintances, Ippudo in Bangsar Shopping Centre is a must-visit for its high quality ramen noodles, tantalising array of dishes and beverages, all wrapped up nicely with great service and a warm atmosphere.
