Despite its rather upscale locale, its lunch sets and grand menus are not only extensive, but great value-for-money as well. The Takaramori (RM 168) is a colourful sashimi platter that’s catered for three or four diners, consisting of salmon belly, sea urchin, tuna belly, and salmon roe. Our favourites from the ensemble are bright red tuna belly and sea urchin; the former is buttery soft in texture while the latter is deliciously creamy with a mellow flavour.
For tempura, go for Kaihomaru Restaurant’s signature Tenpura Moriawase (RM38), a generous serving of thinly-battered then deep-fried eggplants, prawns, squid, flatfish, sweet potato, pumpkin, and mushroom.
Also highly recommended is the Unagi Kabayaki (RM138) served with piping white rice, miso soup and sashimi. The lightly grilled eel is superb and its tender flesh is well-coated with sweet teriyaki sauce, pairing well with the rice and soup.
For drinks, traditional green tea and fresh juices are available, and no Japanese restaurant is complete without a lineup of sakes; there is umeshu and shoju available by the glass, as well as a few Japanese style cocktails.
Open daily for lunch and dinner, Kaihomaru Restaurant at Starhill Gallery is accessible within an eight-minute walk from the Bukit Bintang monorail station. The stylish mall is situated between Pavilion KL and Farenheit 88 shopping centre.
