There’s something for everyone in the exciting city that is Kuala Lumpur, and adrenaline junkies and daredevils are no exception. The KL Tower BASE Jump is an annual four-day event that usually takes place in September, and sees hundreds of base jumpers leap from the open deck of Menara KL's communication tower, all in the name of fun.
It started in 1999, when a brave soul named Aziz Ahmad asked for permission to jump from the tower: the rest is history, and now the event is one of the highlights of the tower’s calendar. Attracting base jumpers from all corners of the world, participants must meet certain criteria: for example, they must have been actively base jumping for the last two years, and must have made no less than 20 jumps in the 12 months leading up to the event.
‘Base’ is actually an acronym for ‘building, ‘antenna’, ‘span’ and ‘earth’, and jumpers hurl themselves into the void and fire off their parachute before reaching the ground. A jump might only take seconds, but it is a sight to be seen, especially when organizers take the action up a notch with night jumps and 16-man canopy train jumping.
Thrill-seeking aside, the event is viewable for free from any area surrounding the tower, but for those who would like to be closer to the action, a RM150 (without harness) or RM200 (with harness) ticket gets you straight to the open deck to watch the jumpers up close and personal. The event is also a great photography opportunity, so bring out all your best gear, and find a spot on Bukit Nenas to catch all the adrenaline on camera!
