La Boca is a surprising find in Pavilion KL. With a weekly roster of live Cuban bands, salsa dancing and Latin American music, this South American-inspired ‘bistro’ really knocks it out of the park in more ways than one. The bar’s prime location along the mall’s al fresco dining stretch, coupled with its detail-obsessive interior design and unique food, are the essence of its success.
With its tagline of ‘a little bit of South America in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’, one of its big draws is its fun, welcoming vibe. Samba, salsa and bachata music are always playing unobtrusively on the sound system, and the place has a friendly team of mixologists and waiters and waitresses serving their creations.
The food and decor are a complete package – making for a thoroughly Latin experience. The interior design is a little zany to say the least – at first glance the wildly colourful, graffiti-covered walls, with exposed bricks and murals of ramshackle buildings, will have you thinking the place belongs in a dusty Buenos Aires barrio.
On closer inspection, placed on the rough wooden and buffed concrete floors, the shabby-chic stripy tables are homely and bright, while metal chairs in a rainbow of colours are sturdy, sleek and obviously expensive. We love the artwork installation of a wrought-ironwork staircase that leads to a first floor door – but where it leads, we don’t know.
Set beside Tom, Dick & Harry’s Live, this corner lot, ground floor operation is all about good music and great food. Expect a menu of tasty Argentinean, Brazilian, Cuban, Mexican and Peruvian food, alongside well-executed cocktails from the creative kitchen team. The food is good – sharing plates like beef empanadas, nachos, fajitas and ceviche make for great starters, but we really love the barbecued meats, served churrascaria-style. In the mood for a taste of Brazil? Then sample seafood moqueca: salmon and prawns served in a spicy, smooth coconut-based curry with fragrant jasmine rice and creamy butternut squash on the side.
Drinks wise, the caipirinha (Brazil’s national cocktail, a mix of Cachaça, sugar and lime) is a mojito-like cocktail that can be called one of La Boca’s best options for a simple drink: the rest of the beverage menu is geared towards fruitier options with stronger flavours. For a drink with a view, we suggest you grab a table outside where you can watch shoppers making their way through the mall.
