    One of Kuala Lumpur’s best French fine-dining restaurants to date, La Vie En Rose is an intimate and classy restaurant overlooking the Bukit Nanas forest reserve that is great for a romantic date. During the weekends it gets busy but management still manages to keep things relaxed, making it seem a lot like a popular French bistro (especially at the bar area).

    Set in a converted mid-20th century bungalow along Jalan Raja Chulan it looks Parisian industrial chic with buffed concrete floors, white brick walls, chandeliers and white-tablecloth-covered tables. The restaurant’s open concept layout contributes to its breezy atmosphere and fun and flirty mood. Its location is very handy as there is a small road that links it to Changkat Bukit Bintang – the city’s premier dining and nightlife spot.

  • At the helm of La Vie En Rose’s kitchen is Toulouse-born, veteran French chef Jean Michel Fraisse (one of the city’s most successful culinary exports) and founder of the French Culinary School in Asia. The food that comes out of his kitchen is faultless, classic French cuisine with a home-cooked taste to it – expect favourites such as foie gras, bouillabaisse and coq au vin.

    We especially like the complimentary, pre-meal amuse-bouches, like the delicate but decadent prawn tartar with Chantilly cream and savoury, sweet salmon rilettes with a dollop of grapefruit jelly. Service is efficient and unobtrusive and there are charming, knowledgeable sommeliers on hand to suggest wine pairings for each course.

    For starters we recommend the rich and creamy-tasting crayfish bisque that pairs well with the slightly-salty parmesan crackers, or the sweet, robust and buttery French onion soup served with salty sourdough bread. Another standout starter is the nutty but strong-flavoured gorgonzola salad – sweet and juicy pears tossed with duck crackling, drizzled with Manuka honey.

    For mains try the succulent, perfectly seasoned tender duck leg confit – covered with a rich sweet and sour sauce, which comes with fragrant, intensely-flavoured truffled mashed potatoes on the side. Finish off your meal with a lemon tart – the buttery pastry is lent a zesty punch by the intense, gooey and creamy lemon filling.
