If you want to wow the socks off your date then Mezze Bistro & Lounge comes highly recommended. Don’t get us wrong, plenty of mixing and mingling with friends and business networking goes on here but the restaurant’s intimate, relaxed atmosphere, makes it one of our favourite date night spots.
Downstairs is the main dining hall (on Friday and Saturday we recommend you book ahead as tables get snapped up pretty fast) and the stairs up to level one lead to a lounge. Decked out like an Italian café with bare red brick walls, leather booths, Oriental-style rugs, fat naked light bulbs hanging from the ceiling and candlelit tables, the two-storey bistro has a distinctly local touch to it with some Malaysian artwork on its walls.
Spearheading the kitchen is Executive Chef Yves from France who puts out an Italian, French, Greek and North African-inspired menu. You will find both comfort food (we love the carbonara with smoky-flavoured bacon), classic western choices like tender steaks and unique, gourmet dishes at this restaurant.
You will be hard pressed to find a dish that is not done superbly well, but none are a match for the seriously excellent and hearty Mezze burger – a thick patty of 250 grams of juicy beef and 80 grams of barbecue pulled pork, grilled to perfection. Topped with whiskey barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, piquant-tasting red cabbage slaw and lettuce, it’s all sandwiched between two slices of Panini bread and served with a side of chunky, crunchy fries: we can almost guarantee that you will be back for more.
Other standout dishes include duck liver pate with pedro ximenez sherry served with fennel marmalade and bread, and sausages on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes with tangy onion gravy. The bar’s shelves of liquor contain more than 40 single malt whiskey choices, beers on tap include Tiger and Heineken and there is a fine selection of wines from major wine-growing regions around the world.
A cosy neighbourhood eatery, what makes it really stand out is its service, with staff members who perform their job so expertly that you cannot help feeling like you are in a Michelin-starred restaurant. And speaking of stars, just recently the restaurant had one-star Michelin chef, Baptiste Fournier, head up the kitchen for a whole week. It was a pretty busy time for the restaurant but both the food and service was top-notch, proving that it is a keeper on the city’s restaurant landscape.
When it comes to music, in the restaurant downstairs you will hear a mix of ballads, beach music, blues, smooth jazz and samba: on Friday and Saturday night there is a live band that plays jazz and R&B in the lounge upstairs. Located in Medan Damansara, Bangsar the only downside to this eatery is that parking can be hard to find (we circled the block twice trying to find a spot) but they have valet parking service.
Whether it is their lamb cutlets, unique pastas, seemingly never-ending list of drinks or the quick on their toes staff members, Mezze Bistro & Lounge is definitely the type of place to write home about.
