Never Follow Suit is a great little boutique along Jalan Telawi 2, Bangsar with quirky, up-and-coming fashion designs. The clothes in this concept store are divided into two sections: men- and womenswear and it’s a great place to let your funky inner child loose. You can find some pretty trendy designs here ranging from re-embellished vintage collections and original designs, to basics like polo shirts.
All clothes found in the store are chosen, designed or embellished by its style-setting owners (stylists Calvin Cheong and Victor Goh, hairstylist David Shaw and designer Joe Chia). If you are having trouble putting together an outfit, one of them is sure to offer style ideas – it is a personal touch that makes you feel great when you walk out of the store, carrying bags of clothes.

One of the things that make the store stand out is the fact that most of the other boutiques along this stretch mainly supply clothes for women but Never Follow Suit has an equal amount of men’s and womenswear collections. This has made it popular with the fashion-conscious urban KL male and helped the store make its mark on the city’s shopping scene.
We particularly like the women’s denim collection, some of which have quirky patches, beadwork and sequins in girly patterns. Another major selling point for the store is that clothes are very reasonably-priced – we found a coral skirt and silk tank combo for just RM148 and a khaki bomber jacket for RM299.

The store instantly catches your eye. From the outside, the décor is very retro-cool with buffed concrete floors, colourfully-upholstered chairs, wooden cabinets with old magazines stacked up high beside, triangular-shaped tables, tufted carpets, pendant lights hanging from the ceiling and large black-and-white photos on the walls.
The store has an ‘open’ concept with no display windows or doors (shutters are used to close the shop down at night) so it looks really spacious the instant you walk in and has a very friendly feel to it. Clothes racks are placed around cosy sitting areas where you can rest your feet for a while or sit down to try on shoes; 80s tunes play on an old vinyl record player while you shop.

The clothes at Never Follow Suit are divided into three sections: vintage, minimalism and urban. When you first enter the store there is the cheerful collection of vintage (50s- to the 80s-style) tops, skirts, dresses – check out the bras hanging from the ceiling, acting as decoration. Then there is a minimalism section with white couches and billowing white curtains – here you will find racks with little black dresses and clothes in monochromatic colours. The urban section of the store has trendy clothes in strong colours, plus this area has fashion accessories (shoes and purses), as well as furniture and knick knacks like throw rugs and harmoniums for sale.
The only downside to the shop is that it closes at 19:00 – a little too early for weekday shopping if you keep regular office working hours, but at least it is open on Saturday and Sunday.
