Ohla Tapas & Cocktails is a contemporary Spanish restaurant that’s situated within The Intermark Kuala Lumpur. Hailed as one of Kuala Lumpur’s finest hidden gems, this tapas venue is helmed by Spanish chef Toni Valero, whose past experiences includes the award-winning El Celler de Can Roca and Mugaritz in Spain.
Red-and-black hued murals of Spain's annual San Fermin Fiesta adorn the walls while floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the bustling Kuala Lumpur city centre, resulting in a contemporary and casual ambience with tantalisingly authentic Spanish fare. Furnished with several light wooden tables and chairs, as well as a narrow bar counter with high bar stools facing the open kitchen, this modern restaurant has a seating capacity of approximately 27 people.
Serving a selection of Spanish porcine dishes and indulgent wines, diners are presented with a simple snacks and tapas menu in Spanish (with English translations) as well as an extensive list of Spanish wines, vermouths, beers, liquor, and creative cocktails that’s composed by Peruvian sommelier Gustavo Arriaga.
Ohla Tapas & Cocktails prides itself in delivering authentic Spanish delicacies to Kuala Lumpur’s ever-evolving dining scene. We recommend starting off with Ohla’s house-made olivas marinadas (RM13), which consists of juicy olives, baby onions, peppers, and gherkins marinated in rosemary, star anise, cinnamon, and extra virgin olive oil. Paired with a sip of Yzaguirre Red (RM16), we also sample the anchoas del mediterráneo (RM4.50), a simple yet decadent ensemble of fresh Mediterranean anchovies, and the more citrusy boquerones con ajo y aceite verde (RM 17.50) that’s laden with garlic and parsley oil.
Diners in the mood for pork will delight in cochinillo iberico a baja temperatura con verduras (RM38.50), a slab of Iberico suckling pig that’s slow-cooked for 24 hours, resulting in a crunchy caramelised skin with a succulent melt-in-your-mouth texture. We also highly recommend the Spanish suckling lamb (RM39.50), made with the sumptuous meat of a two-week old lamb that’s reduced with rocket and cardamom sauce, served with rosemary-infused milk.
Ohla Tapas & Cocktail also serves a wide range of delicacies from the Mediterranean such as the arroz negro con all i oli de rustido (RM34.50) and pulpo del mediterraneo a la parrilla con patata y Pimentón de la Vera (RM42). The former is a sizzling platter of short-grain rice with squid ink, diced scallops and langoustines while the latter consists of a sous-vide then grilled octopus tentacle on a bed of mashed potatoes and La Vera smoked paprika.
Another perfectly executed dish of Ohla Tapas & Cocktails is the vieira con panceta ibérica y pure de patata con limón (RM39.50). Wrapped in savoury Iberico pork belly and served on a bed of lemon mashed potatoes, the juicy scallops are grilled to perfection in a charcoal-fired Josper oven which results in a well-balanced and flavourful combination of seafood and meat.
Ending our meal on a sweet note, we indulge in Moscatel Alvear (RM21), a Spanish dessert wine with fragrant notes of liquorice, confit orange peel, toasted sugar, figs, and caramel. We also savour the Ohla Tapas & Cocktails’ platano caramelizado con brandy (RM20.50) for dessert: a delightful combination of sliced caramelised banana with brandy gelatine, house-made banana ice-cream, and a sprinkling of white chocolate candies.
In addition to its prime location in Kuala Lumpur city centre, Ohla Tapas & Cocktails’s casual vibe and impressive food-and-beverage offerings has resulted in a steady following of locals and expats alike. If you are craving authentic Spanish cuisine in Kuala Lumpur, this stylish establishment is the best place to go to.
