Paradiso Cine Lounge is a trendy bar in Publika Mall that turns into a movie theatre on Wednesday and Saturday nights. The bar also hosts live bands, art displays and after 20:00 on Friday and Saturday nights it has a DJ who plays R&B, 80s and top 40 hits.
Movies played range from classic, black-and-white romances like Casablanca to epic dramatic feature films like The Godfather as well as romantic comedies, documentaries and shorts. Paradiso Cine Lounge is also known for its good finger food and drink items (quirkily named after popular flicks). Casual, affordable, friendly and fun, it’s a great place for groups, as well as for couples on date nights.
Paradiso Cine Lounge looks very much like an Italian bistro. The décor is romantic yet modern with buffed concrete floors, spot-lit wine shelves, cosy wooden tables for four, a marble-countertop bar and lots of red accents.
Towards the back, dark heavy drapes separate the bar from the film screening area – a casual, cosy lounge with comfortable leather bucket chairs and a large 12-ft wide projector screen.
One of the great things about this seating area is that it is so spacious that you can get to stand up and stretch your feet whenever you feel like it without obstructing anyone’s view of the screen. Also, without the armrest between chairs like traditional movie theatres, these seats are big enough for couples who want to snuggle together.
Service is friendly and quick, making you feel right at home. There is background chatter from the bar area, but it is subdued and the atmosphere is very laid back.
The finger food choices at Paradiso Cine Lounge are tasty and affordable. Our favourite is the chicken wings with peanut butter glaze: the chicken is crispy and juicy, and the peanut butter glaze tastes a lot like satay sauce but has a thicker, smoother texture and a sweeter, nuttier flavour.
For those who want a proper meal, the menu is limited but the kitchen does its signature dishes well – the lamb shank, pasta with lobster and prawns and fish & chips are all particularly flavoursome. Our favourite time to visit is on Sunday when the place turns into a family-friendly restaurant with cartoons playing on the screen and a good brunch spread.
When it comes to the bar’s unique cocktails we recommend the sweet (and a tad sour) Pulp Fiction – a mix of vodka, rock melon, pistachio, vanilla and lime. Also good is the Desperado – a concoction of patron silver, elderflower and mangosteen juice, it was a fruity drink with a sweet and sharp taste.
