Picknik in Solaris Dutamas is both wallet-friendly and wholesome. Headed by the celebrity chef Nik Michael Imran (of Masterchef Malaysia fame) and his dad Dato Nik Ezar, the cafe serves unpretentious, fuss-free food in the form of tapas, sandwiches, pastas, cutlets, baked fish among others, all within reasonable price brackets. What sets Picknik apart is the easy-going ambience you will find when you walk through the doors.
Upon stepping into this small yet cosy eatery, one can’t help but notice its unique open kitchen. Here, all the hard work that goes into your dishes is showcased in its full glory; with seats surrounding the kitchen area (like a bar) if you’re keen on chatting to friendly Nik and maybe getting some cooking tips and tricks. The rest of the restaurant interior is kept simple, with black, red and lime accents, keeping in line with the concept of a comfort food cafe.

So what’s good for starters? We recommend the rarely-seen (well, not in Kuala Lumpur, anyway) stracciatella soup – a concoction of Italian chicken consommé with parmesan cheese, croutons, parsley and egg-white ribbons. The rest of the menu looks something out of a dream yet prices are as low as RM14 for a plate of pasta, and here you can find the crowd favourite aglio olio (with an option to add prawns), and also the more adventurous chicken liver pate (pureed chicken liver with butter), a favourite and the signature dish of the restaurant.
Salads are also getting in on the action, with the amazing watercress and pear being one of the chef’s recommendations, consisting of fresh watercress leaves and sweet pears and strawberries with sprinkled special mustard sauce and almonds for added flavours and texture. As for the mains, Fat Tuesday chicken is one of the praiseworthy items on the menu; the breaded chicken is stuffed with prawns on a bed of rice, and topped with béarnaise sauce. For something different, try the grilled lamb cutlet with kimchi chilli sauce – the lamb is juicy and tender and while we were sceptical of the kimchi sauce at first, it provided a great added flavour to the meat.
Make sure to leave some room, as you shouldn’t leave Picknik without trying their desserts! The peanut butter slice is a steal at RM8, considering how smooth this mascarpone-peanut butter combination is. Another stellar item on the dessert menu is the salted caramel brownie – it is rich but not too overwhelming, and the ice cream on top adds up a tinge of sweetness to this superbly-done item.
Solaris Dutamas is one of KL’s biggest commercial complexes, housing a mall (Publika), serviced residences units and offices in its premises. To get to Solaris Dutamas, board the Myrapid B115 bus from either LRT Pasar Seni or LRT Masjid Jamek stations, and disembark at Masjid Wilayah (Federal Territory Mosque). Solaris Dutamas is less than a kilometre from the mosque, about 10 minutes’ walking distance from the complex.
