  • Poppy Collection in Kuala Lumpur

Four bars under one roof along Jalan P Ramlee

Set just down the road from Rum Jungle and Beach Club, Poppy Collection is a group of four bars under one roof along Jalan P Ramlee. A mega-nightclub all about dancing and creative cocktails, it was prominent on the city’s nightlife scene for many years until it closed its doors in 2011 for extensive refurbishment, eventually reopening in late 2012 with a cleaner, simpler design and layout.

Made up of Poppy Garden, Mandalay Lounge, Passions and Havanita Cigar Lounge, most people simply refer to the nightclub as Poppy’s: a door charge of RM50 (after 22:30 – there is no cover charge if you dine at Poppy Garden) gains you access to all its outlets.

  • The two-storey spacious and airy glass building houses four major sections, with the entire club able to accommodate about 2,000 people. Set downstairs is Poppy Garden, the club’s candlelit, garden-inspired dining area with dining space for 80 people (after 22:00 chairs and tables are pushed up against the wall to create dance floor space). Offering a menu of tasty Thai cuisine (the tom yum is particularly excellent), bare brick walls, water features, heavy wooden furniture, palm trees and lanterns give this area an extremely romantic vibe.

Upstairs at Poppy Collection is Passions, packing a powerful sound system and a dance floor that fills up fast. The decor is modish trendy with an extra large deejay console, white furnishings and fixtures and neon lights that bathe the space in funky colours. Meanwhile, Mandalay Lounge has a pool (open throughout the night) where guests can take a dip to cool off if they feel so inclined, and Havanita Cigar Lounge enjoys a dark, sleek look that complements the nightclub’s low ceilings. The lounge boasts a menu of wines and cigars.

One of the nightclub’s biggest draws is the fact that they play a variety of music on rotation under one roof. If you’re in the mood to krump the night away with R&B tunes, then head to Poppy Garden, whereas Passions boasts a solid music policy that leans toward house and techno, while Mandalay Lounge consistently features an impressive live music line-up. Poppy Collection gets its fair share of big-name acts, attracting international headliners like deejays Jazzy Jazz, Chris Fortier and David Morales from America. On occasion you will find epic parties that span all four bars at Poppy Collection.

Beers on tap there are the usual suspects of Carlsberg, Tiger and Heineken, but Poppy Collection also offers spirits and cocktails. You will love the fact that drinks are never watered down (a dirty martini is heavy on the dirty) – the perfect way to spice up your dance routines.
