Rootz Rooftop Bar in Bukit Bintang
Rooftop bar in Lot 10 shopping mall
Opulence – thy name is Rootz Rooftop Bar. A nightclub that is devoted to the idea of debonair drinking, this nightclub (topping Lot 10 mall) is a lavishly-conceived version of a Russian palace bar. No, you won’t find a bust of Lenin or Soviet propaganda posters – instead it is more like a Tsar’s palace with velvet drapes, thick carpeting and gold-gilded paintings of early 19th century Renaissance revival on the walls.
It may be set along the same road as Hard Rock Cafe KL and Luna Bar (along Jalan Sultan Ismail) but do not expect it to blend in with these raucous nightlife spots – a visit to Rootz Rooftop Bar is bound to be a decadent experience that is glitzier than anything you have ever come across in the city. Their music policy of R&B, house and remixed top 40 tunes makes it a great dance nightclub.
Sumptuous and luxurious are just a couple of buzzwords that spring to mind when trying to describe the place. Impressing instantly, the interior looks like baroque set of a movie on the life of Russian royalty with a rustic colour palette of deep red, black and gold featuring prominently in all of its furnishings and fixtures. From the entrance hall with funhouse-style mirrors, the nightclub opens up to a ballroom-sized space with elaborate curlicues on the ceilings, sheer damask screens and glittering chandeliers.
The centrepiece here is a bar, set on an elevated platform in the centre of the room and a dance floor that can accommodate up to 400 people (plenty of space to dance!). Ringed around are VIP areas with deep red velvet and black leather couches. The nightclub’s vibe is a mix of polish and electric, with lots of local celebrities as well as foreigners.
Easily drawing in crowds to fill up the 700-capacity space simply by word-of-mouth, the nightclub is only open four days a week and we love the fact that it has regular themed parties. Our favourite is Playroom on Wednesday – a dedicated Ladies Night event (two free drinks for the lucky girls) with a distinctive Playboy-centric theme going on.
Run This Town on Thursdays will allow you to get your krump on with the latest and greatest in hip hop and R&B, while Harajuku Night and The Get Up on Friday and Saturday respectively, sees a music policy of commercial R&B and house tunes.
Rootz Rooftop Bar has an extensive champagne selection but what really makes it stand out are the creative cocktails. One of only three nightclubs in KL to offer an absinthe-based drink, their signature cocktail is called the Yoga Flame (a mix of blue Curacao, banana cream, framboise and absinthe). A lot like a flaming Lamborghini (a flaming drink of Baileys, Kahlua and tequila), it has a slightly sweet and bitter taste but don’t have more than three or you’ll get pretty tipsy.
The management also operates a restaurant right next door, Teeq: have dinner here and they will provide you with free entry to Rootz. Alternatively, if you dress up (bunny ears on Wednesday etc.) according to themed nights, you will get to pass through Rootz Rooftop Bar’s front doors free of charge too.
