Rum Jungle in Kuala Lumpur

Forest-themed nightclub in Kuala Lumpur

Notification: Rum Jungle is permanently closed

Set along Jalan P Ramlee, a street that is fast becoming populated with hip nightclubs and bars, the deceptively massive Rum Jungle is a rainforest-themed dance club that has been a fixture in Kuala Lumpur’s nightlife scene since 2004. The club’s overlying motto is to ‘explore the exotic’, with interior decor resembling a giant Tiki hut – think water features, palm trees, aquariums, fake flaming torches and an attap roof.

Arguably one of the coolest places in the city when the sun goes down, a night out at Rum Jungle is as close to a frisky city soirée as you’ll get. The place has the same electrifying vibe as the legendary Beach Club just down the road and they have one thing in common: both are dance clubs that are particularly popular with tourists and both have notorious reputations for attracting ‘working girls’.

A bar with immediate likeability, Rum Jungle is divided into four areas: a main bar, VIP section, sports bar and lounge. If you are here to dance, the main room (which is home to Rum Jungle’s extra-large dance floor) is the place to be: however, its numerous tables contribute to a close-quarters feel and stiflingly-warm air – you are sure to work up a shine after just a few minutes here.

Take our advice and get a table at either the sports bar (where wall-mounted TVs screen live sports feeds) or the lounge. There is no air conditioning due to its open-air concept but wall fans keep the place well ventilated and coupled with its super comfy black-upholstered bucket armchairs and cool breezes, this is the perfect place to sit if you want to get away from the booming music inside.

There is also a Balinese-style VIP section called Borneo Bar, towards the back of the club – its stone tables, rattan furniture, ponds and palm fronds combine to create a more exclusive feel.

Due to its sprawling size, Rum Jungle is able to cater to all comers: there is a space for dancing and deafening music, plus spots for quiet drinking. No matter whether you like it loud and bright, or quiet and breezy, this nightclub is the perfect embodiment of a hip, indulgent hangout. The team behind Rum Jungle is creative when it comes to mixing up drinks, with potent and delicious classics like long island iced tea and strawberry margaritas, as well as spirits and beers.

The forest theme at Rum Jungle perfectly complements the music: their tunes policy rarely strays from hip hop, reggae and Latin dance music, but on special nights you can sometimes get an eclectic mix of bands and DJs that spin house and remixed radio tunes.
