Sid’s Pub in Damansara

British-inspired neighbourhood pub in KL

Sid’s Pub is a fairly authentic reproduction of a true-blue British pub – expect football on the telly, a variety of beers on tap and typical, tasty pub grub. Its flagship outlet, which opened in 2007, is tucked away in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (a residential area about 30 minutes from the city centre) but there are three other venues, in Bukit Tuanku, Bangsar South and Damansara Heights.

A worthwhile stop on Kuala Lumpur bar crawls, what makes this place stand out is its ‘community’ feel – staff members treat all-comers like you are visiting their home to have a drink, while other patrons are only too happy to chat with you. Plus, it is one of the few places in the city where you can bring your pet along.

The Telegraph called it one of the best British pubs outside the United Kingdom and this place is especially popular with tourists, locals from the nearby residential areas and expats. Outside is a small but breezy front terrace, while inside rough-hewn wooden tables and chairs, dark timber panelling and white brick walls, hung with lots of picture frames give the place an intimate feel. Coupled with discreet lighting from wall lamps, bay windows and fairy lights lining the ceiling, the bar has a definite striking yet rustic look.

The hearty pub grub gets full marks from us: the menu is less of a listing and more of a book and we love the fact that they are separated into sections like ‘from the soup kettle’ and ‘burgers and dogs’.

The kitchen serves typical favourites like a full English breakfast set, bangers and mash, and fish n’ chips – the best we have had in the area. But what we really love are munchies like the faultless and fat ‘pigs in blankets’, and the fried pork and chicken sausages with onions and chillies – tasty snacks that go extremely well with beer.

The beverage list is scrawled on large blackboards above the bar and its drinks policy stays firmly true to its British-inspired pub feel, with beers (Anchor, Guinness, Heineken, Kilkenny, Paulaner Munchen, Tiger and Strongbow Cider) on tap and spirits such as gin, vodka, rum, tequila and whiskey available by-the-glass or bottle. Locals say Sid’s serves the best draught Guinness in town. The only catch is that we find that the beers do not come cheap: prices range from RM12 to RM15 excluding service tax but the bar’s saving grace is the fact that Happy Hour runs from 11:00 – 20:00 daily.
