Silver Spoon restaurant is a tiny spot in Publika Mall that pulls in a steady stream of regulars who are passionate about the offerings on its Italian menu. Located in Publika mall, it looks like a small, intimate take on a wine cellar, with an atmosphere that buzzes with class and fun. If you are a fan of authentic trattorias (like Tatto restaurant in the Kuala Lumpur city centre, off Jalan Tun Razak), then Silver Spoon comes highly recommended. In the beginning it was an inconspicuous place that, reputation-wise, was dwarfed by its neighbours, Fat Boy’s Burger Bar, The Social, The Bee and Ben’s Restaurant. Then the place steadily began to draw in a crowd that came for its food and classy vibe. Today the place is a definite keeper.
This is the brand’s second outlet (the flagship is located in Kepong) and with no ridiculous mark-ups, you get tasty, honest, food and drinks at affordable prices.
At first glance this restaurant, with its minimalistic contemporary furniture, buffed concrete floors and racks of wine can appear a little formal, but despite all the modern touches, it really feels like a local bar with its relaxed atmosphere.
Here the well-dressed crowd has the run of the place and you will notice elegant attire on almost everyone. Everything is polished and well executed, from the ambiance and service to the clientele and food.
Despite so many watering holes sprouting up in Publika Mall, the place is fast becoming one of the city’s most popular drinking outposts. If you are mad for vino, Silver Spoon has a good selection of labels.
If you are not a wine drinker, Silver Spoon does carry premium whiskies and some beers (come during happy hour for some good deals). The usual suspects like mojitos and sangrias star in Silver Spoon’s textbook-thick drinks menu but regulars will also recommend the bar’s strawberry-basil caipiroska and strawberry caipirinha, both sweet and fruity concoctions that pack quite a punch.
Silver Spoon has an excellently executed menu of Italian favourites – many people come for the pizzas as the restaurant has such a wide array of toppings.
Other culinary highlights at Silver Spoon include chicken liver pate , a thick, buttery rich, smooth spread: eaten with crusty baguette slices; the flavour of the pate is brilliantly enhanced with brandy and thyme.
A good main dish to sample is the southern fried chicken salad, a mix of leafy greens, tomatoes, juicy grilled mushrooms and toasted almonds tossed with tarragon and mustard dressing.
Take note that the menu at the Publika branch of Silver Spoon deviates a little from the flagship outlet in Kepong: here, there are some local flavours mixed in with Italian dishes – particularly good is the spaghetti with shrimp tom yam ragu.
Silver Spoon restaurant’s tiramisu is the perfect way to end your meal: a sweet, airy dessert that is just the right balance of sponge, coffee and liquor. Another way to indulge your sweet tooth is to dive into the chocolate pot: a promising mousse-like evening indulgence.
Silver Spoon provides a worthwhile reason to stray away from your usual haunts. The place can get pretty busy at the tail end of a working week: arrive early to snag a table and drink and dine the night away.
