Easily exuding a glitzy and glamorous vibe, Sultan’s Lounge is a cocktail lounge in Mandarin Oriental Hotel KL. A favourite place for the who’s who of Kuala Lumpur to mix and mingle, due to its underground location in the basement of the hotel it has a hidden, mysterious feel.
The colour scheme is primarily white but neon lights wash the place in pink, purple, blue and orange hues throughout the night. Designed by Stephane Dupoux (creator of hip restaurants such as Buddha Bar in New York), some say it looks like an Arabic desert prince’s tent but to us it looks ultra modern with polished wooden floors and sheer white flowing fabric hanging from the ceiling in fan-like fashion.
Semi-circular couches with colourful, tasselled throw pillows by the windows and tables with quirky chairs (that look like snail shells) bundled together in the centre make up the seating layout. Towards one side of the lounge is a set of screen windows that provide views of the city centre’s busy streets and at the end of the bar is a small dance space and pool tables.
Some of its more unique features include a golden, lit-up DJ console, a glass bar and an artsy water fountain. There is a heavy focus on music at Sultan’s Lounge, with a resident DJ who plays music heavy on the bass: tunes are a mix of pop radio hits, R&B and some ‘best of the 80s’ tracks.

The delicious drinks are essential to your evening here, and the bar’s menu is heavy on wines and cocktails. A standout is Orientini – a dry, martini-like drink with rum, orange Curacao, grenadine and pineapple – or you can sweeten things up with the surprisingly light MO Kuala Lumpur Sultini (a mix of vodka, mango, cassis, orange and cranberry).
Sultan’s Lounge is a high-end cocktail lounge so you won’t find bar snacks like buffalo chicken wings here – rather the food menu mostly consists of canapés like freshly shucked oysters and caviar. Staff members deliver top notch service.
