The Establishment restaurant is the latest addition to Bukit Bintang’s nightlife scene. A neighbour to Palate Palette bistro and No Black Tie jazz bar, drawing instant attention are its whitewashed exterior walls, every inch covered in graffiti-style mural images of famous celebrities such as Amy Winehouse, Audrey Hepburn and Abe Lincoln.
A lovely bar set in a beautiful colonial-style terrace, the expansive and stylish The Establishment is divided into three distinctly different levels: the Industrial Lounge, Opulent Lounge and Rooftop. With fusion grill options, The Establishment is doing a lot of things extremely well.
The cavernous Industrial Lounge on the ground floor is where you can dine and drink. The alfresco setting is a smart, casual space and features deliberately rustic and eclectic vintage-style furnishings that make it look like a cross between the class of The Hamptons and warehouse chic.
A wall of money plants in the garden provides the area with a colour infusion, but otherwise the place is nice and neutral. The open kitchen and grill can be seen from all angles of the room: you can choose to sit on the outdoor leather couches, the cosy garden-style tables in the back courtyard or at the expansive communal tables in the indoor dining room.
A lovely corner to dine and drink (plus, being at street level, it allows you to people-watch!), there is great emphasis placed on the in-house traditionally-cooked meals with a modern twist.

The classy Opulent Lounge upstairs serves as great dance space. The aesthetic is a balance of lavish contemporary elements, rich colours, plush, decadent textures, classic armchairs, sparkly chandeliers and gilded mirrors.
The air-conditioned atmosphere helps when you are deliberating whether or not to get up off of the couch but the throbbing bass of the dance floor beckons like a siren’s call. The folks at The Opulent Lounge are dedicated to getting everybody shaking their ‘groove things’, so the music is loud and alternates between R&B, techno and pop hits (depending on the DJ of the night). Guaranteed to be a lot of club fun, the party runs deep into the night here.
The Rooftop, set on the third floor of this warehouse-sized drinking joint, is the space to head to if you are looking to be fed and watered. If you drop in for a drink at the end of the work week you will be sharing the room with a sizable body of the city’s suits.
There is a good variety of drinks that go down very easily but you can also order something more contrived (gin and tonic, vodka and soda etc) – either way you really cannot go wrong. Highly recommended is the Emerald Peacock, a brilliant mix of pisco, sugar syrup, lime juice, pomegranate molasses, apple juice and fresh watermelon. The perfect accessory to a peaceful afternoon, the brilliantly pink drink helps wash down the restobar’s free top-notch hot dogs.
If you are looking for somewhere a little different this weekend, The Establishment is the place for you. Located nearby Changkat Bukit Bintang, it is pretty easy to find. It occupies a large lot snuggled up to both Palate Palette bistro and No Black Tie jazz bar, on the corner of Jalan Nagasari and Jalan Mesui.
From outside the KL city centre, take the monorail and alight at the Bukit Bintang station. From here walk along Jalan Bukit Bintang (towards Bukit Bintang Plaza) and turn into the side street with souvenir shops – Jalan Mesui is about two streets up.
Opening Hours: 17:00 – 01:00 Monday & Tuesday; 17:00 – 03:00 Wednesday – Saturday
Address: 31 Jalan Mesui, Bukit Bintang, KL
