The Hill Bar at Damansara Heights

Bar-cum-bistro at Kuala Lumpur

The Hill is a trendy bar-cum-bistro situated in the classy neighbourhood of Damansara Heights, less than five km from the city centre. Located on top a hill (hence the name), patrons are first greeted with a set of stairs to climb to get to the bar. Going up, you’ll come to realize that the bar is spread out over three floors, each catering to the various needs of the customers.

The bar has an easy-going vibe, right from the menu to the simplistic décor of the three dining and drinking areas. A ‘Japanese Garden’ takes up the whole of the first floor and it is perfect for large parties, with the seats enclosing the chabudai-like square table and a private beer tap.

A beer garden on the second floor has concrete flooring and a wooden platform with a bar and kitchen. The Hill’s open-air concept is definitely a plus as the cooling night breezes are a welcome plus. A loft-cum-lounge is up another flight of stairs. Snag a place by the balcony and it instantly becomes one of the most romantic places in KL for a sit-down dinner as the sunset views here are pretty amazing.

The Hill certainly has a few surprises up to its sleeve when it comes to the menu. The management of the bar adds extra pizzazz by incorporating a Japanese menu alongside the usual pastas and burgers with good results. We recommend the dragon maki; this sushi roll comprises large chunks of eel, cucumber and flying fish roe, and the portion is large enough to share with your friends or your special someone.

Another best-seller here is the Green Monster burger – a juicy lamb patty and fried onion rings together with the specially-made mint sauce is a fail-safe option. Top it off with a glass from their amazing beer selection and you’ll have a great meal indeed.

The Hill’s extensive cocktail menu, on the other hand, is a different ballgame. Quirky cartoon-like illustrations depict how the cocktails will be presented and you will notice how the bar has ditched the old martini and cocktail glasses as another way of spicing things up. Favourites include the watermelon slush (Smirnoff vodka, midori, lychee liqueur and watermelon presented in half a watermelon) and Milo ais (iced Milo with rum in a steel teh tarik cup) but if you’re up for an adventure, give ‘weed killer’ a shot. A blend of six spirits, imbibed through a hosepipe, it’s certainly a momentous experience.

Flanked by office towers, the bar gets busy after working hours on weekday evenings and as it is frequented by professionals be sure to make a reservation. Parking is a little bit tricky, but a car valet service is available at RM10 per car.
