Whisk Espresso Bar and Cake Shop is the place for comfort food – serving great coffee and delectable homemade cakes in a quaint setting. Wooden stools, dimmed warm lighting and bare white brick walls make up the casual and modest interior, but don’t let that fool you; this cafe is far from quiet. Whisk is almost always busy, entertaining guests from all around Klang Valley who flock their tiny cafe for a cuppa or a slice of their heavenly cakes.
The cafe keeps it simple – while it has a rather limited menu but what you see is definitely what you get; all of the cakes and macaroons are on display on the counter and cooler, and the coffee menu is handwritten on the wall, so look around before placing an order so that you don’t miss their latest offerings. Some noteworthy items on the coffee menu are the lattes (we highly recommend the hazelnut and piccolo ones), and their cold brews. The cold drinks are brewed using different beans every other day, sourced from all around the world, for added variety and surprise for visitors.

As for their cakes, make sure you get there early to snag a slice of their sell-out whisk pink stacks. When we visited the cafe, we managed to get the second-last slice, and it was only 14:00! The moist, absolutely delicious cake is actually five white chocolate butter cakes stacked one upon one another with rose butter cream in between, and each is in varying shades of pink, hence the name. The hummingbird cake is high on our list too, rich with banana, pineapple, pecans topped with cream cheese.
The delightful macaroons are also popular with regulars, and if you require something cold to dig in, try out the locally-famous The Last Polka ice creams. These homemade, all-natural ice creams aren’t your regular cure for the heat; their quintessentially-Malaysian flavours such as teh tarik and salted gula Melaka are bestseller items worth writing home about.
Occupying an outlet in the lower ground floor of Empire Shopping Gallery, the cafe is rather tiny and seats less than 20 people at one time, so it’s likely for you not to find a spot to sit if you come during tea time. Fret not though, all of the items are available for takeaway, and if you’re planning for a party, you’ll be happy to know that Whisk also accepts orders for their cakes and macaroons.
Whisk has been nominated twice in the Time Out Food Awards for ‘Best Place to Have Coffee in KL’ so you can rest assured that this place means business when it comes to coffee. Aficionados seem to regard it so too, and the demand for their delectable treats has been so high that Whisk has opened up another outlet, Whisk Outpost, in the popular One Utama shopping mall.
