Kuala Lumpur Weather

Climate and weather in KL

Kuala Lumpur is located 3.13° (348 km) north of the equator belt, giving it a warm maritime tropical weather. The weather is hot and humid throughout the year with rainfall, the intensity of which depends on the time of the year. This gives Kuala Lumpur an ideal climate that is suitable for visiting all-year-round. Visitors and tourists can enjoy exploring Kuala Lumpur throughout the year in moderately stable weather.

Temperatures generally range between 29°C - 35°C during the day and 26°C - 29°C at night. It may get colder after periods of heavy rainfall. As it is shielded by mountainous valleys on many different sides, Kuala Lumpur is relatively cooler than most places in Malaysia while being one of the least affected by monsoon winds coming from the east or west.

Rainfall occurs mostly between October till March while May till July are generally the drier months. Kuala Lumpur usually has heavy sunshine during the mornings lasting till the afternoons, while the evenings may see rain and occasional thunderstorms. Humidity in the air lies around 80% so it is easy to sweat during the day while walking around. This balance of calm weather makes Kuala Lumpur one of the most stable places to visit during the year at any particular time.

Seasons in Malaysia

There are two monsoons that hit Peninsular Malaysia each year. The eastern side gets hit the hardest between October till January with much rainfall and thunderstorms. A mountain range that cuts through the centre of the country provides a light shield to the eastern monsoon, but Kuala Lumpur and other cities on the west still receive much rainfall and storms during this time. From March to April, there is another monsoon that comes from the west and hits places like Kuala Lumpur directly, bringing the most rainfall to Kuala Lumpur.

This means that for most of the year, Kuala Lumpur is peppered with showers and occasional thunderstorms. The driest periods are usually between May till July, where there is a respite from the monsoon seasons. However, the storms when they do come are relatively short, and the rains actually bring a cooling atmosphere to the city. For tourists and visitors, this means that Kuala Lumpur is suitable for visits all-year-round, with no particular period or season to avoid.

Visitors are encouraged to wear light clothing to escape the heat and sweat. T-shirts, short pants and Bermudas are most suitable while a cap or sunglasses will provide you some shielding from the tropical sun. Shopping malls, stores and restaurants are mostly air-conditioned in the city so you don't have to worry about a thing about escaping heat!
