The Forest Research Instituted Malaysia is a world-reputed centre for tropical forestry research, with over 100 years of experience in forestry and forest products research. Also called FRIM, this natural attraction is located in Kepong, a residential and commercial area that’s accessible within a 20-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur city centre.
Although its popular Canopy Walk is no longer open to the public, FRIM still attracts a steady crowd of visitors thanks to its wide range of recreational activities, camping sites, and lush rainforest setting.

What to See and Do at Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM)
Jogging, hiking, and cycling are the most popular activities here, and there are bicycles for rent at reasonable rates. For the safety of its visitors, do note that mountain biking is limited to marked trails within Bukit Bujang, Simpang K, Perah Campsite, Tongkat Ali or Bukit Steroid, and Puncak Pinus.
FRIM also has a designated campsite for those looking to spend the night here, called Perah Campsite. Priced at RM500 per day, it houses a kitchen, hall, “A-Hut” chalets, restrooms, benches, and obstacle run. You can also rent a tent for RM30 each, while sleeping bags, fans, and plug points cost RM50 per day.

You can also visit a traditional Malay village house called Rumah Terengganu, which was relocated from Pulau Rusa in Terengganu. It was built entirely from Chengal wood without using a single nail, making it one of the most unique attractions in FRIM. There’s also a research gallery that displays various specimens, publications, and artificial materials from previous researches conducted here.
The Forest Research Instituted Malaysia (FRIM) is open daily between 05:00 and 19:30, though visitors can only partake in recreational activities from 05:30 until 07:30 and 08:30 until 19:30 on weekdays. The easiest way to get to this recreational park is by car or taxi but if you’re getting around KL via public transport, we highly recommend taking the KTM train to the Kepong KTM Station. From there, FRIM is about 10 minutes away via taxi.
